The converter internals must be spotless, Steve, otherwise all that rubbish will end up in the solenoid packs of a replacement box.

Bristol Transmissions cut an old converter open, clean it out, then reweld and balance it before fitting to a new unit. The oil cooler also requires a flush out.

Hi Mike,

Not using any of the old gearbox/torque convertor. Replacement 'box and torque convertor is half the mileage of mine.
I have flushed through the oil cooler and pipes. Just got to modify my little trolley, so I can lift it all back into place without getting a hernia!

Hi ALL

Having read all the posts about rusty cars, I have managed to save 3 s types, that were really for the scrap yard.
I have always loved jaguars and I promised myself that one day I would own 1, that was 15 years ago, and I've had about 6 now, xj40's and s types, they just need care and love, the one I'm working on a the minute , has done 254000 miles, yes has a bit of rust, well Fred flint stone car but nothing a bit of time cant sort, apart from the rust and a few silly problems, the car is lovely and runs like its brand new, but i would like to know why jaguar never tried to do something about the rusting years ago. I've had new cars (not jaguars) i once bought a new Mondeo st24 about 1 year old, but swopped it for a double 6 Daimler, wife was not happy, but hey ho.

European car makers have never learned how to rot proof steel cars or how to ensure water doesn` enter box sections. But then it isn`t in their best interests to make a car last more than about fifteen years. Go to Eastern manufacturers and the situation appears a bit different.

Anyway, who wants a steel car. The best thing Jaguar and other sensible makers eventually actioned was an ali vehicle. Best thing since sliced bread. Shame about sub-frame protection. Jaguar are still hopeless at that! F-type and other more recent cars prove that.

The problem is that we all want cars that last forever. Exactly what the manufacturers don`t want.Try getting parts for the more obscure areas of even an X350...wiper units, bumper reflectors, etc, etc. The makers get you eventually because they make parts supply very difficult as a vehicle ages.
