Jaguar diagnostic system

Subject to correction, there is a system in use by independent garages, which was also advertsied in the club magazine a while back.

I believe it costs upwards of £8000.

But as far as I know it isn't useable on the XJS. I've seen it in use on V8 powered Jaguars, where a laptop like screen is plugged into a diagnostic port under the central console. The car can be driven like this and all manner of computer related problems (like when the gearbox decides the car is in reverse and the engine disagrees and it won't move) can be diagnosed.

What problem are you seeking to diagnose?

There are a number of after-market diagnostic tools such as code readers and re-setters which are available at reasonable cost (£150). However, my limited knowledge of these is that they usually demand OBD II compliance (an american-derived standard of protocols, codes & interfaces). I think that Jaguar introduced OBD II on 1994.75 Model Year XJSs, with the interface on the passenger A-post.

It is possible that with suitable interfaces, these readers might be compliant with the serial link interfaces fitted in the boot on earlier XJSs but it would probably require further investigation. One of the comapnies that market a range of these devices is Gendan.

pjts

I can confirm location of the interface on passenger A post - Swallows Jaguar used such a device to diagnose my "stepper motor" problem.
It also showed that thermostat was U/S as coolant would not reach required operating temperature. Don't ask me how - if a feeler gauge and spanner won't sort it I'm lost
