i have a 3.6 engine and box unit that has been removed from a scrap car.Does anyone know if splitting the 3.6 auto box from the engine is as simple as removing all the bellhousing external bolts or are there others lurking inside accessed through the aperture. i removed all external bolts then found the box was reluctant to part company with the engine. I did'nt want to force anything so did'nt proceed any further.
Also is it possible to change the auto box from a 3.6 coupe without having to remove the engine and box as a unit?

Prise off the black plastic oval cover to gain access to the three bolts holding the flex plate to the torque converter. (Turning the converter to expose each bolt in turn).
Then when all the bellhousing bolts are removed, it will still be located by steel pins so the housing will need to be carefully prised away.
Once parted, the torque converter may get stuck, its best to keep it attached to the gearbox if possible so that dirt doesn't get into the hydraulic system.
Yes, it is possible to change the box with the engine still in the car, a couple of the bellhousing bolts can be a challenge though.
What has gone wrong with your old box?

thanks for that pop,
the box in my car (currently under long term restoration) was noisy at low speed, the best i can describe is a whine/come rubbing noise from around the box area. one expert who had years of various jag experience said it was probably a part worn bearing and would last for many miles more, but i found the noise 'bugged me' so wanted it fixed.
having read the forum, one thing i will try before changing the box is renewing the oil and filter,

I could not help but think this noise might be from the gearbox mounting towards the rear of the box. If the spring is weak or broken, or the rubbers perished then mechanical noises get easily transmitted. Maybe worth checking?
