air filters and cold air intake mod?

Postby masterb » Thu Dec 13, 2007 9:25 pm

Hi can anyone recommend a good quality or performance air filter at a reasonable price?
I think K&M's filters at 40 quid are a bit of a rip off, but if that's the price you gotta pay?
Some one told me that AJ6 enginnering did one for 13 quid ish, but when i looked, they were more like 35 quid.
Oh and by the way, as mine is on the changeover year (87) i am talking about the panelm type, not the cylinder.
Also i am thinking of fabricating and installing a cold air intake for my car, any body with previous for this one?
Cheers.

air filters and cold air intake mod?

Try AJ6 again on this as I have the stage 3 upgrade on my 6 ltr and they pulled in some cold air from under the radiator via some flexible 2 inch ducting and up into the air filter casing.
Give them a call, they're always helpful.

thanks v much for that , was along the lines of what i was thinking of doing myself.
Did a similar induction/ cold air intake for my old Honda Integra, which it seemed to enjoy.
Thanks again for your reply.

air filters and cold air intake mod?

i might have missed it somewhere, but are you considering doing this to a V12 or a six ?

as the V12 means double the work , lol and double the cost

induction of air is simple enough , just get some lengths of flexi metal ducting from the DIY and route it in the engine bay ensuring it wont come in contact with moving parts,

the actual filter system is a little more involved,

you can go with the existing induction setup ( airbox ) and install an oiled cotton filer into that box, most companies will do one to fit it, and there isnt much difference between any of them to be honest , insurers do not need to be notified of this mod, as all you are doing is replacing a paper filter with a better quality cotton filter in the existing system.....

or

you can install an induction kit, this will be the cotton filter on its own induction tube, usually cone shaped and out on the end of the airbox system tube after removing the airbox, this is a more effective mod, however it is one that has to be declared to your insurers as you are carrying out modifications to the engine, it may or may-not incur a premium....

either of these filters will give about 6 bhp extra in performance and slightly better throttle response , not to mention a deeper sounding induction noise when flooring the pedal ( more growl )

please remember

more air=more fuel=more power

while you are doing it, take of the throttle bodies and give em a good clean along with any breather or vacuum tubes along the way , it will all help

.. pulled in some cold air from under the radiator ..

Take care on an everyday car, it is surprisingly easy to suck in water in even minor flooding. I managed this some years ago on my Citroen turbo-diesel and wrecked the engine, writing the car off.

Thanks for the replies everyone.
BB just for info my car is a 3.6 manual 87, did forget to put that, or possibly left it out thinking that is same for 3.6 and for the V12 apart from you would have to build 2(air intakes) for the V12.
Glad you replied actually, because been trying to look at some of the pictures you posted on here, and a lot of them cant be viewed?
I just get a weird small box in the top left corners?

Dont know weather this is a site problem, or the pics have gone because they are on an old posting.
Or weather its my comp,or a setting not allowing me to view?
In my comps diffence it does show other pics posted on site.
Shame as i wanted to have a look and learn
Ta for reply.

air filters and cold air intake mod?

Postby Gordon@1962 » Tue Dec 25, 2007 3:05 pm

I was contemplating fitting K&N's or something similar to mine. (1991 3.6) but I found all the after market filters were the flat type.
Mine is the cylinder.
So I never did. :(

While on the subject of cold intakes I came across this article on my travels.
http://www.jag-lovers.org/xj-s/book/ColdAirIntake.html

It's for V12's but I'm sure ideas can adapted

Ta for that posting gordon, all of these are along the lines of what i had in mind.
dont like the sound of the kirby palm mod, in as much as it looks like a real pain to take headlights out etc.
think i will try an easier route/mod.
