Correct Coolant Type

Postby Scottish-Exile » Fri Jun 23, 2006 11:53 pm

I've spent most of the night searching the web, and whilst there's loads of information, I'm still none the wiser as to what coolant I should be using.

Bit of background. I've got a low coolant warning and it's certainly low in the header tank, as I can see the top of what I guess are the sensors.

My car is a late 2004 4.2 XK8

Went to local Jag dealers and asked for the ORANGE coolant.

Anyway, what do they give me. PINK

Went back today to exchange it. Parts guy insists that what he's given me is what is in his 'book' as correct for my car.

The label on my engine says it's ORANGE coolant, part WSS-M97B 44-D

The PINK they've sold me is ESD M97B 49-A

Eventually the parts guy gets the service manager. He tells me that they only use two types of coolant, GREEN or RED. He insists that the PINK is the 'RED' variety and is right for my car.

I'm just not convinced. I'm no expert, but why sell me something that is clearly different from what the label on my car says I should be using.

I'll be calling a few other dealers in the morning, assuming their Parts dept are open Saturdays.

From all I've read, you must never mix coolants, and despite what this service guy is telling me, as my car currently has ORANGE, and the label in the engine bay also confirms it's ORANGE, then all I want to use is ORANGE, not PINK.

Can anyone help and advise me as to whether I should definitely only use ORANGE, which I understand is the Long Life Stuff. Would I be damaging the system if I topped up the ORANGE with the PINK :?:

Has anyone bought Orange that could give me the part number for a 1 litre bottle :?:

For reference, the part number of the 1 litre bottle of PINK, is JLM209722

This sounds like a touch of colour confusion. JLM 20972 is the part number for the 'orange' coolant also known as WSS-M97B44-D. Any number after 20972 refers to the container quantity. Mike.

All these different colours...

I too have the 'coolant low' warning. DO NOT PANIC.

I have decided to change to Evans Waterless coolant anyway and the cheap plastic thermostat housing will also have to go...

Expensive, but the yellow/pink stuff is only good for five years whereas the Evans stuff is "4 Ever". That'll do for me :o

I will also buy the 'prep' stuff that removes the crud and all traces of water before introducing the 21st century coolant to my engine..

This stuff will not pressurise so pumps, hoses will increase their useful life..Also it does not boil...My only worry is that come next summer my heater will not work.....

Hi Tel,
It will be interesting to hear how you get on and any differences you notice. In the past, I have been tempted to try the same material in my V12 but the £300 cost due to the V12's immense cooling system volume has always put me off. Mike.

Hello Chaps!

Longtime...

Three years on since last post and the Evans coolant hasn't let me down at all. There was a glitch when the 'low coolant' light came on and worried me but I found the coolant had been dumped into the 'atmospheric collection bottle' for some reason...A bit of research on the internetweb and I found XK8's do this silliness with water coolants as well...Topped up with the pricey stuff @a year ago...no faults (or burst hoses) found....
