Starting Problem

I have a 1996 XK8 always clipped up to a Cetec Charger when not in use,Just recently it has started NOT to turn the engine over when operating the starter key.Not always just now and again
if I turn off and then back on a couple of time it starts but its getting progressivley Lazy.
I have checked the battery terminals and they are tight. There is no solenoid clicking when trying to start just nothing and then she starts.I suspect a start relay,Starter Solenoid or even a dirty commutator on the starter. I doent know where all these componants are so could someone point me in the best direction also can this problem be sorted or found using some plug in reader,Everything else is working on the car.

Don't overlook the ignition switch and barrel. If they are the original items, they will have worn and may have reached the stage whereby the contacts have become unreliable. Mike.

I've owned my XK8 since April 2005 and have had this problem since month 7 of ownership.

It gradually got worse in that the frequency of the issue & the delay in actually starting.

Around six years ago, out of frustration, I opened the bonnet & pressed down on every fuse & relay I could find. Jumped back into car & started straight away. Since then the frequency reduced & I gradually reduced what I pressed down each time it happens. I now know that the culprit (in my case) is either a 'brown' relay in the Engine Compartment Fuse Box (there are up to 7 relay's in the 'box), the Fuse Box Connectors to the Relay(s) or the wiring beneath. The Handbook would have you believe that only things associated with Relay R7 would be the culprit but experience has lead me to believe that the wiring is not as described.

thanks for all the help it was the starter relay changed and now all fine
