So, that car just had its gearbox oil changed. It was flused a few times and they managed to get back in just less than 8 litres of the new oil. My first impression is that it was certainly a good idea. Gear changes are indeed smoother (coupled with new engine oil and servicing) I realised I don't notice most of the changes (in the "normal" driving mode). Sometimes it still doesn't do 1st to 2nd change as smooth as I'd like but overall I am satisfied. :D
maxbozon,

I think your Jaguar dealer is getting quite confused and quoting you for a fluid and filter change on the ZF gearbox fitted in the x308 not the 4-speed box in your x300. That would explain their belief that they need "special fluid" and also justify that high cost. I suspect that if you go back and explain exactly which car you've got, that price will tumble significantly.

There is little point trying to explain anything to them, since everything is on the "system" -- they've got my model, reg plate and probably the VN number too at the dealership, so they simply have a list of operations they can do and the price is pre-set there somewhere else. So, there's very little flexibility they have at the front desk coupled with some lack of technical knowledge. Their loss :)

Max, I don't think a car of your year would have a 4Hp22, that is a very agricultural box that will happily use the cheapest Dexron II. (I have one!).

Whatever fluid you choose, as others have said you will not be able to drain it all, I expect about 3l will remain. Also worth considering is that if the box has had a traditional fluid in the past and you change to a synthetic it may stir up deep seated muck and start to cause more problems then it solves.

Cheers,
Pop
I always wanted to have a tracktor  I am not sure changing to a different type of oil would cause what you've said, unless it has got some built-in solvents, which I doubt!

Many of the actual products/ lubricants recommended in the owners handbook from 20-25 years ago for XJ40/X300 do not even exist anymore. Of course you could buy the nearest modern equivalent from Castrol or Shell and be in the same ball park really.
For that reason I've check ZF web-site of an up to date list of compatible oils for this particular model. I've linked it in my earlier post.
