I've had my 1998 XJ8 3.2 since August and it had its first MOT on my possession today.
It passed but came back with an advisory "slight play in rear drive shafts"
Are there any usual suspected issues that can be attributed to this that I should check?
Is it anything I should be worried about in the short term?
The only thing I've really noticed as a possible symptom of this is some slight vibration at speed, on the motorway.
Any advice would be appreciated

Re: MOT Advisory: "slight play in rear drive shafts"
this comes up from time to time
Jaguar state that an exact amount of weight should be placed in the boot and a full tank of petrol as well for detecting play etc in the drive train of the X308 during testing
i have never known an MOT tester do this ( as per jaguar spec ) and thus they detect ' play ' in some of the components in the car
as an advisory you are not obliged to carry out remedial works, only advised , if the advice is correct
i think in this case you don't have anything to worry about

Hi BB ,
Would you kindly amplify - what has the exact weight got to do with possible slack in the drive train - I don't understand

Re: MOT Advisory: "slight play in rear drive shafts"
its more the UJ's on the drive shafts, as the car is unloaded or suspended in the air during testing, the unloaded suspension will manifest in the UJ's seeming to have some play
the Jaguar JTIS method is to put a set amount of weight in the boot and to ensure there is a full tank of fuel , 100kg comes to mind
or to strap down the suspension under load and then check for ' play ' in the rear suspension and drive train components
i had this perceived issue with my own car, hence the knowledge

i will see if i can find the relevant document, but everyone can use google
