I am keen to buy my first XJS convertible but am a little confused regarding changes made to the model.

1. I am told the later cars had galvanized bodies is this true and how would I identify one IE by chassis number or???

2. I prefer a 4 litre, how good are they?

3. What are the main areas of concern when but one?

4. Anyone know of a good low mileage car for sale? my budget is 10/25k max for the right car.

5. What are the most important modifications you would recommend?

Any help or advise would be gratefully received and I look forward to meeting many of you when I get a car.

Thanks

Michael

Michael,

Welcome to the Bulletin Board and congratulations on deciding to buy such a great car (even if you haven't quite got it yet!).

I'm sure others will have varying views but, for what it's worth, here's my thoughts:

The XJSs known as "facelift" cars are the ones that had a high degree of galvanisation of the body panels. These were first produced from March 1991. Facelift cars can be easily distinguished by the different type of more modern, smoked lens, wraparound rear lights, and on the Coupes, by the curved corner rear side windows. This was also the introduction of the 4.0 litre AJ6 engine in the XJS

There are three "series" of facelift cars:

VIN 179737 to 188104. These cars have the same slimmer bumpers as the earlier models.

VIN 188105 to 194774. These cars have the big plastic bumpers, but 4.0 litre cars still have the AJ6 engine

VIN 194775 to VIN 226645. 4.0 litre cars now have the revised AJ16 engine and cars from VIN 221855 are called "Celebration" models.

IMO the 4 litre engine is great, capable of huge mileages befoe major work is required. The AJ16 engine is even better, about 13bhp extra and regarded by many people as the best engine that Jaguar ever made.

With the type of budget you've got, you should be looking for an AJ16-engined car. Engine-wise they only seem to have two failings - exhaust manifolds can be prone to cracking. Easy to fix - a manifold costs about £180. The downpipe can also fracture near the join to the next pipe. Very expensive if you buy a new pipe (£850) but a £30 weld seems to do the job. I've had both situations on my car.

Apart from that, the fins on the radiator can be prone to corroding. This can give rise to the car running hot in traffic etc. New or recon rads are naturally readily available. Doesn't seem to happen on all cars, though.

4.0 litre convertibles come equipped with "Touring" suspension which is basically a little softer than on coupes, and with silightly higher-profile tyres, although these may well have been changed by previous owners.

All AJ16-engined 4 litre Autos have the ZF electronically switchable gearbox. I leave mine in Sport mode all the time.

Others may disagree but I think the corrosion resistance is good on the late cars and if you buy a convertible, I think it's more likely to have led a sheltered life. I had mine rust-proofed when I bought it 4 years ago and I still think it looks pretty good.

Upgrade-wise, all I've really done is change the steering rack mounting bushes for polyeurethane ones. The original design by Jaguar for these bushes is somewhat flawed once they start to wear, and many people choose to upgrade them..

Hope that gives you a very brief insight. If yu fancy a trip to Kent, you're very welcome to come and see my car and also the two cars of Norman Hicks - the Forum Co-ordinator. Give me a ring if you'd like to talk further.

Thanks very much for the welcome and the info and I hope it won't be long until I am driving an XJS of my own.

I have found a dealer (Clarkes) near Tonbridge Wells which I may visit as they seem to have a few nice examples so I may well call you.

Do you know anything of this dealer?

Thanks Again
Michael

I know of Clarkes, he is in Cross-in-Hand near Heathfield.
Some good reports and he has been involved in specialty cars for years, thats all I can say though....He has not moved and is not a recent resident, been in the same place for years.
Guess you have seen the website......

I got my XJS this week and I can`t beleive what a stunning car it is, it keeps on surprising me every day........ :D
Been through the bills and the previous keeper has spent 4.2K in the last 4 years.... ..Been looked after. 8) ....Not that many miles either.

Michael,

I don't have any personal experience of Clarkes but Nigel Thorley the JEC magazine editor did a feature on them just two or three months ago. If you haven't got that magazine, give me a ring or drop me an email and I'll get it sent to you.

Clarke's keep their stock updated on their website at:

www.clarkesjaguar.co.uk

As with most vehicles, I would suggest you look at as many as possible to familarise yourself with condition, specification, price etc. Where is Hanley Swan? I'm sure any members in the local area would be happy to let you view their cars.

Hi Att and Paul

Thank you for the info, I have not seen the article on Clarkes so if it is avaible that would be good to see.

Hanley Swan is near Malvern Worcestershire best known for the Three Counties Showground.

At the moment I am thinking I must resist some of the cars I have seen and wait for a celebration 1995 ish to come out of the woodwork.

Michael

I'm footloose and fancy free this Saturday as Libby is working and I'm not - for a change!! :)

A run out to Malvern sounds good - I could take some piccys too.
Would you like me to bring my 95 Celebration up for you to look at and have a run out in? We could chat Cats for a while.

Reply here and e-mail me for a contact telephone number if you are interested ( e-mail is in members details).

Best Wishes

I looked for 4 months and gave up on a car that actually bore resemblence to the advert in which it was described......I saw some dogs to be honest.
I had given up the search due to time constraints and lack of good cars for sale. I found the one I have by chance, checked it out and the rest is history...It was about 8-10 miles up the road from me 8) ...Funny how things work out.

Hi Tony

I would just like to thank you for taking the time and trouble to drive your car up to my home for me to confirm an XJS is for me.

Your advice has been most helpful and I look forward to acquiring my own XJS very soon.

Thanks again
Michael

Hi, Michael

I just thought I'd let you know of my experiences with Clarkes. I was away for most of August, so I left my Celebration convertible with them for a few weeks to have some jobs done - mainly undersealing, new bushes and a service. I was very happy with what they did, and although the bill hurt, It did seem reasonable for what I had done. The guys (father & son) are real enthusiasts, and know the cars inside out. I'll certainly use them again. Also, if you do find a car for sale privately in the south, they're the guys I'd trust to inspect it for you.

Hope this helps :)

Regards,

Keith.

Hi Keith

Thank you for the info I am tempted to catch a train over to see what they have and it is always good to hear from a existing customer.
