LPG on a small saloon ie MkII

Postby Martec » Mon Jan 25, 2016 5:02 pm

Hi,

As some will know I run our 3.8 MkII on LPG, does anyone else use LPG on the XK engine?

What system are you using?

What problems do you have?

It would appear I'm the only one using LPG with the old XK engine, or the only one who has a few problems from time to time. To date I've had to use the software on my own laptop, but I have now found a service guy reasonably local, about 50/70 miles away.

I have an LPG supplier 1/4 of a mile away but if that place discontinues supplying it I would consider removing the tank and gas carbs.

Today I found a reference to LPG in the magazine so thinking again, besides my wife is from Yorkshire and so likes the lower cost of fuel!!!!

Hi Brian

I think I saw reference years ago to people with XJ6's using LPG, might be worth putting up a post on the XJ6 forum to see if any of them are using LPG!

Hi John,

They have a different engine, AJ6 or whatever, My problems seem to stem from the old XK engine burning oil and finally doing for the Lambda sensor, not helped if I have to run on petrol for any length of time ie holidays due to the carburrettors throwing it in with a bucket.

I have considered removing the system or running a truely open system without a lambda (different if any ECU).

I was hoping to hear from anyone else with similar problems.

My engine has done 40,000 miles since rebuild so not surprising it will be burning oil, probably from rebuild anyway. I might try the Mk 7 to 9 and the Xj6 series forum, obviously no-one else on here.

thanks
Brian

Now confirmed the diff seal is leaking so another job in the cold.

Hi Brian

The older XJ6's with the XK engine 68 up to 85 or 86 I think. I'm sure I've seen something on these running on LPG. Sorry can't remember when or who.

Sorry Brian,
Ive been ill in bed for a few days and just catching up with the new posts so only Just spotted this post which clarifies what you were after. You can ignore my previous reply to your original post as it relates to my x308 which is a vastly different engine to yours.
Once again Sorry.

Well I thought I had found someone to look at my old mixer system, but it appears not now (no reply from emails!).

I emailed and spoke to a Technicial at NGK and I am going in roughly the right direction (need a colder running plug for my Iridium plugs) and my assumed weak running is really rich running.

Can anyone recommend a good LPG agent familiar with the old mixer systems in the Doncaster area, it is all injection systems now!

It seems I'm back to my own resources again.
