Fitting CD player in 1968 MK2

Can anyone help with advice on fitting CD player in mk2 please?

Hi,
In what respect do you need advice for a CD player, the standard lower, centre dash panel has a slot for a radio and a speaker above it (if I remember correctly). There is already a wire behind the dash to supply power!

Thanks Brian. I don't want to remove the radio, I would like to fit a CD player which is hidden so was wondering if anyone had done that successfully, and which CD player was used. Regards Paul

Have you thought of going even more modern and having an old radio converted to modern internals with a connection for a USB stick. This is a bit outside my comfort zone as I fitted a modern radio/CD player and then fitted two large speakers into the side panels at the A posts and two onto the rear parcel shelf, but these hide the air vents into the boot space for full ventilation.

The modified old radio would look the part but give you a few more options!

Hi Brian, just seen your post. I am also looking to fit a modern unit into the original slot for the radio, using a standard modern player. I had assumed that the speakers would fit onto the side panels near the a post but my car has no Room behind the trim unless the access plates are left off. Is that what you have had to do or did you use surface mounted speakers? Still trying to find a good compact speaker for the purpose. Phil

Hi Phil,

I seem to have answered most of this question in your other post, I asked a local supplier/installer of ICE what speakers should I use to suit the car, so they are quite large speakers in the foot wells and smaller ones in the parcel shelf. I have big feet and do tend to catch them from time to time but that is all. If you need more information I can photograph them for you and the panel inserts?

Hi Brian, many thanks for this, Ive just seen your replies, very helpful. I did also look at some of the retro look and old stereos refitted with modern internals type units, which would suit th appearance of these cars, but one or two people have mentioned they haven't been overly impressed with them, so I'm also going down the road of a standard modern unit. Most of the original post seems to have been answered but hope this helps.

I fitted a Kenwood radio cassette player in the dash tower with a six disc cd changer in the boot. Not too bad a job. If I were doing it now I would fit a radio cd head unit of course.

I fitted main speakers. In the cavity ahead of the a pillar. There are two circular plates which can be removed to accommodate quite a large speaker 6'm from memory. You then have to cut an appropriate hole in the trim board to take the grille. I bought a set of speakers with separate tweeters and a crossover unit. I mounted the tweeters under the outboard ends of the dash header rail facing downward where they are quite effective and unobtrusive.

Whatever you do with ICE you'll find like me you don't use it very much preferring to listen to the lovely Xk engine.
