water in driver footwell
Moderators:GJS-typeR, Montana5
Hi I have a large puddle in the drivers footwell. The car was parked front down on the drive. I am assuming it is rain running down the screen. Been looking for a drain hose for the screen run off. My old Audi had a visible large chamber between the bulkhead and the engine bay which on one occasion filled with water due to a blocked drain hose. Again I assume that the s type has something similar but cant see anything. Any ideas. Bernie

Hi Bernie.
Many issues of this nature tend to be down to the plastic DPC type membrane which is glued to the door frame behind the door card. You will need to remove the card from the door to investigate. If the door has previously been dismantled to perhaps attend to a broken window winder mechanism or a defective door lock mechanism, then it is possible the membrane between the door card and the door frame may not have been replaced correctly or has been ripped.
To remove the door card, lift the little rubber mat in the depression by the door handle/pull which you use when you pull the door shut. Under the mat are a couple of cross head screws which need to be removed. Go to the bottom of the door card and pull the card away from the bottom of the door frame and then work your way up the sides. Then lift the card upwards. Having the window down will help. Then wriggle off the escutcheon around the door opening handle and lift the card away. Put the window fully up again and dismantle the wiring multi-plugs. Don`t worry about marking them all up. They are all different.
With the card removed from the door, you will see the membrane stuck to the door frame. It must be fully glued in place and any defects or rips attended to. Perhaps easier to make a new membrane if the existing one is in a poor state.
Also check that the door seal is in good condition.
Leakage from the screen is unusual on these cars.
Try that and see how you get on. Come back to us with what you find please.

Re: water in driver footwell
Mike as usual thanks. I will try that in the morning, put in the garage out of the rain at the moment The reason I thought it may be the screen drain,if there is one is,that I noticed the steering wheel did not move when I put the key in the ignition so thought may have water behind steering column. Will let you know the result asap. To make matters worse her in doors had a crash so down to one borrowed Fiat Panda!!!
Re: water in driver footwell
Hi As promised a report. Not door card but the sun roof. Not fully seated at the back. Open and closed a couple of times and it seems ok. Only problem is it has caused the lining to sag at the side of the screen. Seem to remember someone saying that ironing is supposed to fix that but had to use two sided tape under instructions from the boss. Bernie
Re: water in driver footwell
Hi seek and yea shall find. Details under interiors however no report on the outcome. Mike I see you had the same problem with the cloth at the side of the screen. How did you fix it? Bernie
Re: water in driver footwell
I ignored it and sold the car!
Brian, I recall attempted a pillar cover strip and re-glue with vehicle type glue and a moderate iron. Perhaps he can comment further.
I was tempted to replace the velour with something more substantial. I thought that perhaps re-glueing might not be successful with the old eleven year old material. It is often hard to get new glue to stick to the remains of the old. a suitable colour vinyl as used for small boat trimming, with or without foam backing, may be an alternative solution.

Re: water in driver footwell
Hi Bernie,
I had/have the same problem with the interior covers either side of the windscreen. After carefully pulling back the door seal rubber to clear the side covers and then GENTLY with a sustained pull they will come off (only clipped in), top first.
We tried to iron it back on again, but it doesn't stay as the clothe trim is ontop of thin foam or something similar and it fell off again. My wife bought some special glue to try, but I found a good set in a scrapyard car and fitted that.
The problem is finding a glue that doesn't stain later on. I'll ask her to try it out and see how it goes, I can only suggest second hand spares.
I'll not comment on cheap tat spares for other things that are becoming available, I can see me spending more time in scrapyards getting good original quality secondhand spares!!! Working out a way of removing the nut to reused top rear wishbones now.
Best wishes
Brian
