pityful windscreen washers

Having recently acquired my first Mk 2, a 1968 340, which has been stripped,bare metalled and then note quite finished by the last owner, I am just working through bits that need sorting . One of these is the windscreen washers, which just about manage to put some water on the bottom of the screen.Ive checked the jets are clear,all the tubing, the pump is whirring away and found no blockages, but the water literally just clears the wiper arms, which is pretty much useless. I know the wipers on these are a bit naff, but Ive had several classics before and not had anything like this issue. It feels like there isn't sufficient pressure being put out by the pump, but cant see any obvious problem. Anyone got any advice please?

perhaps check the electrical connections to the pump, poor connections would slow the pump down?

Hi

The 340 had the later plastic bottle with the pump mounted on top which were a great improvement over the original glass bottle ones. Your 340 pump should throw water up the screen if working correctly.

My 240 had the plastic washer bottle with a built in pump and was never very good. I replaced it early in my ownership with an aftermarket uni with the pump on top of the washer bottle. This is much more powerful but there is only one jet per side so although there is a fair amount of water comes out it is very localised. Double jet units would probably be advantageous.

Ok had another look at the washer pump. cleaned up the connections to the pump(mounted on top of the bottle as per standard as mentioned earlier by eccosse)- no difference. The pump is noisy, but it does seem to whirr away quite happily. Looking at the 2 terminals into the pump after cleaning, they are (now)clearly marked' + and -'. Since the last owner stripped the car out and has only done a few extremely dry miles since rebuild, I wondered (me not being electrically minded at all) whether it was a simple case of he'd connected the wires up wrongly. Swapped the wires over and the pump (still noisy) pushes the water out considerably higher onto the screen....Can it really be that simple..?

yes it previously was running in reverse, I hadn't thought of that.
