P0037 error code

Postby AGS » Mon Aug 10, 2015 12:38 pm

Hi Folks, I've finally got around to trying to fix the engine management light fault I've got with my 2002 STR. I bought an i930 scanner and it's giving me the following code:

P0037 H02S heater control circuit low bank 1 sensor 2

From what I've read online this is the drivers side sensor downstream of the catalytic converter and it isn't heating up in time so the ECU is registering a fault. This seems to be backed up by the live data I streamed from the car as there was no voltage registering or readouts on this sensor until the car had been running for a while. After clearing the codes the light goes out but comes back on shortly after starting the car up again which I'm presuming means the fault is generated before the sensor heats up and starts working.

Could anyone on here verify this and let me know if the drivers side is bank 1? I'm told the same sensor on the passenger side was changed prior to me buying the car.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers,

Andrew

That appraisal sounds pretty good. The voltage explanation sounds quite feasible.

The iCarsoft unit is well able to deal with these issues and I recall that it does give some fuel trim information in real time. Certainly that is the case with the Torque app available for Android phones.

Perhaps PTJS1 and Montana 5 can offer further advice shortly.

One sensor having been replaced previously would perhaps suggest that the opposite unit is now also past its best.

Thanks Mike. Do you know if Bank 1 is the drivers side?

The i930 all works well except I get an error when I try to get codes from the engine management system (all the others like Transmission, Instruments etc work fine). It will clear the codes and read live data but gives a communication error when trying to read codes.

So I used the 'ODBII Diagnose' option to find the codes I needed. I'm going to speak to the supplier to find out why this is happening.

Ensure you have done the post purchase 930i update available from the sellers site. That might help.

Will be interested to hear how you progress with the 930 and the car.

Not sure which side is Bank 1. Will research shortly but now just off to Regional Meeting.

Thanks Mike. All the things I've read on the web say Bank 1 is the drivers side except one that said it was the passenger side!

Thanks again Mike. Looks like Bank 1 is the drivers side. I'm going to change the sensor this weekend so will keep you posted.

I fitted the new sensor yesterday and cleared the code and so far everything seems good. The performance of the car is way above anything I've experienced since buying it so I think this problem may have been around since then.

I bought the sensor for £50 (now £60 I notice) on eBay here:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/151183240077

They sent it first class so it came within 24 hours of them shipping it.

Just a couple of pointers for anyone else doing this job:

1. Bank 1 is the drivers (right) side and sensor 2 is in the middle of the catalytic converter (not after it as in some diagrams). Sensor 1 is in the downpipe from the manifold in front of the cat.
2. The drivers side is a little more tricky to remove than the passenger side as there isn't as much space between the transmission and the exhaust.
3. You'll need an open ended 22mm spanner as the sensor has wiring coming out the top so a socket isn't an option (unless you buy a dedicated tool with a slot cut into it, even then I'm not convinced you'd get a bar on it with the space available). We ended up sacrificing the wiring on the failed sensor to get a ring spanner on the nut as it was extremely tight given the heat involved. Once you've got the old one out installing the new one is very simple but let the exhaust and gearbox cool down first if you've driven the car prior to doing the work like I had!

On the i930 scanner; I cannot get mine to read the DTC's from the Engine Control Module. It will clear the codes and the codes can be read using the ODBII Diagnose route. I have reported this to the technical support people at iCarSoft and they replied saying they would look into it and release a patch (I gave them the last section of my VIN).

Thanks for all the help on this Mike.

Cheers,

Andrew

Useful details, Andrew.

I found a similar i930 glitch but never progressed sorting a solution. Carsoft seem pretty receptive to customer feed back. I read several reviews on their range of scanners and users appeared happy that in the event of issues, that their findings would logged and actioned.

I`ve found Cataclean a useful product to keep cats clean and unblocked. Indeed once I have my next Jag, the first thing I shall do upon driving the car away to the petrol station, is to dose the tank with the product. I found a good result when used with my current V8 at 90k miles. The product helps unblock carbonised used cats and helps keep sensors clean. Might be worth dosing your tank and cleaning your cats in view of the sensor issues you have recently experienced. Don`t belt the car though when you have that product in the tank. I made that mistake and had two huge explosions within the exhaust. They confused the sensors and the engine shut down! So gently, gently whilst running any cleaner through the fuel system.

On all V engines one bank / head is always two to three inches forward than the other,So number one is (in my experience) has always been on the forward protruding bank/head,( If that makes any sense)

Cataclean is on the shelf at Halfords and also on ebay.

One bottle per a quarter of a tank is the usual mix. Go easy driving the car whilst you have the cleaner in the tank in any volume. Don`t boot the car. I nearly blew the exhaust off my 4 litre S-type in a moment of enthusiasm. Let the cleaner do its job quietly. You may expect a faster upward gear change within about twenty minutes of adding the cleaner. I use Cataclean just before an MOT. That sorts out low emissions to very low levels.
