Sorry i didnt make it to cadwell.
Well, after the off roading at Mallery i have a broken gearbox.
Now, the logical thing to do is fit another gearbox, but thats far too simple for me! I have decided that what i really need is the 4 speed auto, this has a different bolt pattern so i 'have to' fit the 6 litre engine to go with it.
Do you see where this is starting to go wrong...
So i turn to good old ebay and duly buy a rusty xj40 v12, remove engine and box (struth its heavy, 435kg!) and also keep the rear hubs and drive shafts for an outboard disk conversion.
The neighbors are slightly concened that the bac garden is turning into a breakers yard!
Well, i have just got the 6L engine and box 'in' the XJ-S, you will probably bot be suprised to hear it doesnt really fit. Mostly because the gearbox is about 4 inches longer than the old 3 speed jobby. Also the Marelli ignition, 36cu and gearbox controll ecu seem to have far more wires than they really need! As yet i have no wiring diagrams, but that never stoped me in the past....
So, Oulton park is looking iffy, Silverstone is a must though and i am already booked to do the Nurbergring race in september!
All i have to do now is re-plumb the cooling system (why doesnt the heater matrix fit any more), shorten the prop shaft (or find a pukka 6L one), weld in the lambda bosses in the exhaust, wire the engine and box into the 20 year old electrics, adapt the gear selector (must retain the period look), make an intake system, make a gearbox cooler, adapt the pas pump, fit the outboard rear brakes, fit new brake pads and race fluid, service everything and knock the dents out of the front wing.
So that leaves sunday free then.....

As hobbies go, i sometimes think stamp collecting would be easier.

Cheers
Ralph (the ever hopefull)

Yeah, your probably right. Its certainly addictive.

Dear Forumites, I need help! No, not of the medical variety, its the wiring on this 6.0, i am really struggeling to find a wiring diagram (even at Whitley!).
If anyone has a wiring diagram for a 6.0 v12 and auto box with Merelli ignition and the Lucas 36cu ECU I would be very greatful for a coppy. I have worked out what most of the wires do, but there are about 10 which are not obviouse.
Although the engine came out of an XJ40 (XJ81) it should have the same connections as an XJRS 6.0. Maybe.

In order to make life even more complicated, i am also working out how to fit the XJ40 instrument pack, though i have given up on the message display unit and am concentrating on just getting the dials and warning lights to work.

Well, its either spend the time in the garrage or swim to the shops (its been a bit wet here recently!).

Cheers
Ralph.

The post '87 XJS CDROM workshop service manual seems to cover this. Typically, the scanned diagrams arn't of the best quality and are in black/white so the information is difficult to follow. I think my copy v1.2 is an early one, so perhaps someone has a later version they can check?

Ralph,

Unfortunately, not all the stuff is one CD. There's another CD-Rom which has a lot of the Jaguar documentation relating to model year updates. Having dug through it, there's some pages on the Marelli-controlled digital injection system introduced in '89 model-year. Is this the stuff you're after?

Drop me a line with your email address (check the Contacts page) and I'll email you a page with the wiring diag for the system. If you need more stuff after that, sure we can sort it.
