borge warner 35 gear oil

Postby Gosnell » Sat May 23, 2015 8:30 am

I am suprised that there has not been any blogs about oil types for the Borg Warner 35 gearbox. I am also a member of the Rover P6 club and there is quite a lot of talk regarding the correct oil. In Particular AVOID any oil that has Dexron as it wil destroy the clutches in these gearboxex.. The normal oil recomended is ATF-F, ATF-G or Ford spec M2-33G. In the past I have had to get the gear oil drained out because garage have used oil with Dexron.

So you have been warned

Hi John, I am currently trying to find a supplier (and buy a can) of the correct atf just to keep the level topped up on my 1968 340 auto and not getting very far at all. Been in touch with Penrite who are waiting for a new stock of ATF 33 to come into country, but at the moment finding it difficult to get the right stuff as like you say, a lot of ATF sold online seems to be Dexron based. I've used Opie oils for a while now and find their service and prices very good.

I just had a quick look at their website and came up with this that meets the specs noted:

I'm sure they have alternatives as well or contact them for advice, they are very helpful.

Thanks 'Pop', just ordered from the link you've supplied, many thanks for your help.
On another note, I was looking at Wynns auto transmission conditioner' the other day. I used this a few years back to fix a slight weep on a Scimitar se6 I used as a daily driver, which it did, as well as making the gear changes noticeably smoother. The Wynns 'bumf' states it meets ford and dexron spec, but I cant get a definitive answer on whether its suitable for the borg Warner gearboxes. Still haven't got a response from Wynns themselves, anyone out there used it?
