Hi,
I am wanting to chainge the oil and filter on my 2004 3.0 V6, however I have never done this before and not being the most technical of people was wondering if anyone has any instruction on how to do it (photos would be a bonus).
I managed to change the air suspension pump last year with the help of the good folks on here and i am gusguessing this should be easier?
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated
Regards
Phil
oil & filter change
Re: oil & filter change
Phil, its dead EASY, car in the air, jacked, chocked and axle stands PLEASE!!
remove the engine under tray if it is still there,
locate the sump plug, check it will undo, then locate oil filter on a 3.0 SO easy to find and take off, but just check it will come loose first, remove sump plug, drain old oil, remove old filter
remove engine oil filler cap
fit new sump plug, fit new filter with a smear of grease on the seal, these only need to be hand tight, fill with correct amount of correct oil, replace engine under tray, start car and test run , lower car, dispose of old oil and filter and away you go and enjoy the car again
hope this helps

Re: oil & filter change
Cheers Rob,much appreciated.
One quick clarification though, do I remove the sump plug first or the oil filter, probably sounds like a daft question but i really want to avoid dropping oil anywhere but the tray I bought to catch it.
Thanks again for your help.

Re: oil & filter change
Ok, check the sump plug will come loose first, leave it in situ though, you do not want to drain the oil until you know you can change the filter, same applies with the filter, ensure it will come off before removal, other wise you will have new oil running round an old filter
then remove the plug, drain, remove filter, fit new filter and plug and refill
you must change the sump plug when doing this job

Re: oil & filter change
I`ve never understood why the sump plug complete should be changed each and every time an oil change takes place.
The plug is fitted with an O-ring which may be subject to crush damage as the plug is tightened into the sump. Fair enough. On the basis that it is the O-ring that can wear, in my opinion, seen from an engineering point of view, that is the part that should be replaced rather than the complete plug if it is fit for further service.
I have a box of O-rings and at oil change time, the O-ring alone is what I replace and have done for as long as I have owned my car. I hold the view that if the metal plug is still serviceable, why throw it away when all that requires replacement is simply the ring.

Re: oil & filter change
As Mike as said why change the plug I have only personally changed he ring. I do not know what the filter looks like on your car, but in the past if previous person has not put oil to filter seal on the very rare occasion I have had to hammer a screw driver through the side of the filter to get the thing to move.

Re: oil & filter change
My aircraft training in regard to spin on filters was to oil the seal, turn on until the seal touched the housing then tighten the filter on further by 180 degrees. That is the method I use which has proved leak free and only needs moderate turning effort with a filter wrench to remove.
These filter seals seem to expand slightly in service which ensures a good seal and resistance to spin off.
Hope that helps.

Re: oil & filter change
well done, easy as well wasn't it!!, just enjoy the car now
Re: oil & filter change
All good advice here, The only thing I would do is to leave the under tray off till after the engine has been run and checked for leaks.
PS I also don't fit a new sump plug every time.

Re: oil & filter change
All the Peugeots I have owned in the past had a simple hollow copper washer between the sump plug and the sump. Dead cheap to buy a new one every oil change but not even 100% necessary as the washers still worked after an oil change .
Re: oil & filter change
I always anneal the copper washers and file them flat. No idea if it helps or is necessary, but it beats washing the car

Re: oil & filter change
Since the fuel filter and air filter replacement, I'm getting an extra 1.5 mpg. Not much, but every little helps. Richard
