Oh no ! restricted performance AND the CEL
Moderators:MarkX, mike020150
I'm guessing that the XF in question with the 2 batteries had a stop/start system. I know that the 2.2d XF that I had used this 2 battery system. The point was, I think, to give the vehicle systems a different battery to that used for starting so they didn't go haywire when the stop/start system was operating. I have the same thing on my Volvo V70 but it doesn't work very well! XF system was much better!!

Re: Oh no ! restricted performance AND the CEL
Definitely agree on all the comments regarding the spurious messages/double batteries/voltmeters and the like....
just what did happen to the "simple" cars , did we "elect" (
) the wrong people to "run" our lives
Hmmm, perhaps "Painter" was right after all, his Winter Pack plus modifications could be the way to go

Re: Oh no ! restricted performance AND the CEL
I suspect they two batteries spied in a new XF might be due to the stop/start device. Imagine adding stop/start to PTR's car without some extra battery capacity. That would cause a few spurious lights and messages! Mike.

Re: Oh no ! restricted performance AND the CEL
Well, here we go again !
Today I have had the restricted performance legend AND the engine light again.
Backed it out of the garage with no lights / legends on at all, I have had none since last reporting it on here.
Left it to warm up whilst getting stuff together ready to go out.
Got in to find restricted performance on the display, ignored and tootled off... few hundred yards down the road it went out ............
I had to drop something off three miles down the road, stopped engine for around 20 minutes... started up, restricted performance AND the engine light on
Stopped again to do another chore, got back in still the same, then the restricted performance legend disappeared... engine light still on....
Took it for a blast and did around ten miles, stopped for fuel... got back in light still on AND the blasted restricted performance on again.
On the six mile journey home, at some point, the legend disappeared again but the light was still on.... stuffed it back in the garage....
Still the good news is the now six month old battery is fully charged and is not causing the problem
I have decided I don't really care what the dashboard reports as it seems to be all spurious reporting with no rhyme or reason... seems a few others have also taken this view with no detrimental consequences.

Update;;; dragged Jaguar out today and the engine light was still on....
went out for an hour and stopped car twice... engine light out again... what a pain in the proverbial.

Were there not some throttle body issues with these cars? I know my local Jag Independent has a bucket full of old units which caused owners problems. Replacement with a new or serviceable second hand unit fixed the limp home problems.
It might be worth getting a second hand known good unit and fitting that if all else fails.
I have had to replace a fly by wire throttle on my S-type due to a broken connection in the TAC module. A rather different situation to that found on a K8, I know. I bought a good throttle body on ebay for £25 and fitted it. Pure joy...normal service resumed. I now have another second hand throttle in stock...just in case of another failure. Call me cynical!

I think for the time being I am just going to ignore it as I said previously.... went out to a Supercar meet today, did over sixty miles and NOT ONCE DID ANY LIGHTS OR LEGENDS APPEAR !!!! and it got thrashed through the gears on the left side of the J gate through the sixty miles!
Anyway, its coming off the road at the end of this month, May, so I can get all four corners off, sort the colourful calipers and clean and scrape the arches and reseal. If I get chance then I will also be on with a another clean of the upholstery and a boot lid repaint... but the GT6 needs some TLC now too... going to be busy !

Re: Oh no ! restricted performance AND the CEL
Whilst you are busy cleaning and scraping, why not clean all the earth points you can find on the car? It would be a zero cost task and might just be at the root cause of a loss of enough volts to provoke the warnings. Failing that, a diagnostics session/code reader to determine if you have failing (or even incorrect) O2 sensors or similar would seem to be the only realistic option to ensure the car gets through its next MoT test. Mike.

'Potential to gain' eh? A master of pun, that man. Even a few millivolts should help keep away the dreaded messages. Don't forget the dielectric grease when reassembling.

Well, here we go again !
The car has been in the garage for a while now, connected to my new Ctek charger... needed to go for MoT this morning, the first in my care.
So disconnected it, backed out of the garage and of course the CEL is on and the restricted performance legend...
Left it running for around half an hour before I set off to MoT centre... got in it and the ABS light is on with legends of Trac control, restricted performance and a couple of others I can't even be bothered to remember as I am fed up with this!
Drove at best speed, restricted to 3000rpm of course, and half way to MoT centre stopped car turned off engine waited 20 secs and then restarted all back to normal except the CEL and Restricted Performance.
Passed the MoT with flying colours and a comment on the lack of corrosion and the VERY LOW LEVEL of Emissions!
Got it on diagnostics and came up with one O2 sensor problem (in live data) in that its reading the sensor but it goes out of "sync" with a few seconds of start up, can't tell which one it is on the Snap on code reader.
There are NO error codes recorded and yet there is obviously a problem... any avenues I might go down to resolve the issue would be appreciated !

Re: Oh no ! restricted performance AND the CEL
Lamda issue? Yes quite feasible and many guys here have changed them to good effect.
So it would appear you need one. If the car were mine, before fitting one or more new sensors, i would be attempting an `in the bottle` miracle cure in the hope of some success. Sometimes these chemical mixture additives do have an effect. For just £12 or similar amount, I would be adding a bottle of Cataclean to a quarter of a tank of fuel in an attempt to burn out exhaust contamination. Cataclean not only cleans out cats very well in my experience but is also useful for cleaning up Lamdaa sensors. I would do that before doing any other expensive repairs. Is it not worth a try?

Re: Oh no ! restricted performance AND the CEL
Have you checked the lambda sensors to see if someone has been there before? An odd (non Jaguar) marginal spec replacement could be the guilty party. Sensors from Jaguar are not cheap so it can be tempting to fit so-called 'universal' replacements. Mike.

Never been a fan of this type of cure, "snake oil" springs to mind BUT then it may be worth a try!Lamda issue? Yes quite feasible and many guys here have changed them to good effect.

Re: Oh no ! restricted performance AND the CEL
Guess that is a possibility, still not showing a fault code but the upstream sensor is the suspect... a secondhand unit was fitted, according to the records, in May 2014. Bank one got the "new" item so it may be worth starting there and there is no indication if it was a genuine one either.Have you checked the lambda sensors to see if someone has been there before? Will get it on the ramps next week and have a look see re connections first.
