oil changes

Postby floppy » Mon Apr 17, 2006 2:01 am

Hello,

I am new to xjs's and I was hoping somebody could tell me how long to go between oil changes and what oil is best to use.
Thanks
Mike
I would very much like to meet other XJS drivers in the North Devon area

There's going to be many differing answers to this one, but I change oil and filter anually. Best place to buy the filters are at any of the JEC meetings during the year or Stonleigh, £5 seems to the the going rate which is far cheaper then a local motor factors. As for oil, I like a semi-synthetic which seems a good balance between quality and cost. I prefer Millers which do a semi synthetic 20/50 but is harder to find so usually end up using Comma 15/40. I personally prefer the heavier weight oils as the engine seems quieter and smoother.

I use a quality semi synthetic 15w/40 and change every 4000 miles or so.
Go for an ACEA A3 stamped oil, you know its a decent oil then.
CLEAN old '87 XJ-S 3.6 manual (for sale!)
If no-one buys it soon, its going on classic insurance!
'96 XJR manual (the green monster)

Oil Changes

Floppy
I think it very much depends on your annual mileage.
If high milles, 12,000 plus, filter once a year and oil change twice a year ie every 6,000 miles
Otherwise oil and filter once a year.
Re Oil, I'd go for the recommended Jag Lube spec. for your car.
ie Why put expensive semi/fully synthentic oil in your car if Jaguar didn't advise it in the first place and you are going to drain it out within a short space of time/miles ?
If you change it on a regular basis you're better off than putting expensive oil in and changing it less regularly

oil changes

Postby poprivet » Sat Jun 16, 2007 12:29 pm

This will make some of you cringe! Last month I did an oil change but in tidying up the garage I noticed that over the years I had accumulated a number of part-empty oil containers.

So... in went:
2 litres 15/40 CommaXT
3.5 litres 20/50 Classic Sport
1 litre 10/40 Eurolite
1.75 litres 10/40 Havoline extra

So far all's ok!
