Jon,

There is a very strong TWR connection to the gestation of the XJR-S. It's just that a JaguarSport XJR-S isn't a TWR.

Want the best XJS? Buy one of the following:

- an early original 5.3 manual
- a 4 litre convertible with the AJ16 engine
- a facelift XJR-S
- a 6 litre convertible

Now wait for every other member to contradict my view!

Jon,
...
Want the best XJS? Buy one of the following:

- an early original 5.3 manual
Maybe - 1980 pre-HE seem to be collectible

- a 4 litre convertible with the AJ16 engine
Very desirable - probably one of the most valuable face-lift models

- a facelift XJR-S
Maybe - still 3 speed GM400 box though

- a 6 litre convertible
Very desirable - probably one of the most valuable face-lift models after the AJ16 variant

Now wait for every other member to contradict my view!

H ha . Thank you both. The Lister is definitely out of my range!! I have looked at the facelift Aj-16 and 6.0 convertibles. Prices high, even for the AJ16 but that's fine. May not find a 6!! Lot of good 5.3's about so that's an easy find..but maybe not all great condition. Haven't ruled out a pre-face as there are some. Just that many have quite a few issues to sort.

It will be a a brilliant hunt for the right one. Seems best idea is to nail 2-3 that look like ticking the boxes in..almost..every way...and let you guys at them!! I'm perfectly happy if there's some basic work needed to get to tip-top, just not major stuff! Logical as I'm no mechanic!

Many thanks again for the advice. :)

Cheers,

Jon

Nice-looking car, but an AJ6, not an AJ16 engine.

Unless you're really not bothered about which model, I would get very focused on which type you want, based on your tastes and budget. There are lots of XJSs out there overall, so it's easier to decide first that you want a convertible or a coupe, which variant of the many 5.3, 6.0 or 4.0 type engines that you want, and whether you prefer the look of the pre-HE, HE-series or facelift style.

Enjoy the journey, it'll be good fun and when you find the right car, you'll just know!

PTJS1; what's wrong with the pre-facelift XJR-s then?

Steve,

Absolutely nothing! I really like it. It's just that I prefer facelift cars as you know, and with the 338bhp later 6 litre engine, it makes it the most powerful (and best-looking?) standard XJS produced.

And of course, we want a bit of healthy disagreement, don't we?!

I expect they gave the previous owner £4K on a trade in..........like they offered me £2K for a car I sold privately shortly afterwards for £7K which they would have put on the forecourt for £9K......

I heard they were a bit expensive sales-wise but very tight on the PX, Tony. Your experience proves it!!

Don't want to get you disagreeing too much, Paul and Steve. You are right, of course. Have to decide exactly what I want to be going for. As it's my early days not absolutely sure, but reeling in as much knowledge as possible is paramount(bad pun!) before saying "that's what I want"!

For now, genning up on the technical side as well as taking in the eye candy!!

So, apologise in advance for any dim-wit question when the evidence may be staring me in the face!!

Thanks again,

Jon

John
If you're thinking about a six cylinder car it MUST be an AJ16 (with apologies to all AJ6 owners). More refined, much more HP, better efficiency, smoother, more reliable. I have heard it said from very knowledgable Jaguar sources that the AJ16 was the best 6 cylinder engine that Jaguar ever made, tho this is a subjective opinion obviously.
If you're just entering the market it's a no brainer, but obviously a newer car and prices proportionately higher.

Thanks Tony. It does seem the way to go.

'er indoors doesn't like convertibles..??!!! I do, but happy to go for a Coupe if the right one appears, and double that if the 6.0 comes in budget. Reckon facelift 6.0 convertible will be a touch too far..the way prices are rising!

Here here on the facelift XJR-S, but then I am biased. I'm sure a number of those 338 horses have bolted from the stables, but from 60mph in 2nd to (What ever the speed limit happens to be) it's one of the fastest things I've ever driven. 0-40 is pitiful though. I bet a 4.0 4speed or rare manual would have me.

As JaguarSport was a 50/50 venture, TWR/Jaguar, I can see why people continually quote TWR, because most enthusiasts have heard of them, even if they haven't heard of JaguarSport.

But the rarity of parts and the necessary ECU hook up systems for tuning a Zytek XJR-S I'd say go for a late 6.0 v12 XJS. If you can afford the fuel. All XJS/XJ-S cars are truely wonderful.

But... There is something magical about a V12.

Yes. I think I would be totally over the moon with any of these wonderful cars, but seriously taking your advice!! There is a 6.0 Facelift at Clarkes at £14995, which will be top budget. Looks a lovely car..but I know I will be equally happy with the 4.0, whether coupe or convertible. I do think it should be the later facelift as perhaps more the 'modern' classic, not denigrating any of the earlier models, just as graceful and equally enthralling!!

I know, over the next 2 months..before I can think of moving on this...that there will be more mouth-watering metal appearing whether trade, private and JEC members, so it's everyone's dream!!!

Cheers,

Jon

Checked DVLA records as per the TWR reg. car and they have it as an XJS Auto, not a Jaguarsport XJR-S which the real deal is, from that same year.

Looks like maybe someone's just added the bodykit and called it an XJR-S whereas it def. wasn't when it left the factory!!

Perhaps there weren't any genuine ones left???
