The R12 and R134a systems have very different charging ports, when there's R134a in an R12 system, the charge ports will be R134 adaptors permanently fitted. It's also very unlikley you'd find R12 in a R134a system!.
If you see external threaded schrader ports both same size that'll be an R12 system with mineral oil not compatible with '134, so you have to drain the compresser and fill with PAO68 for '134.
I think you can buy R12 to '134 adaptors over the counter somewhere.
Are you still on R12?

Can't help in the London area but I do know of an AC engineer in Cornwall who will recover the fridge gas, pressure test the circuit for leaks (using nitrogen and a drop test), de-hydrate and re-charge with RS24 for about £80
Hi
I'm in South Brent, Devon. I would be pleased to know details of the engineer in Cornwall please.
