time to take her apart again

Postby Brakebuster » Sun Nov 30, 2014 1:13 pm

well, not too much , to start with , lol

i have just SORN'd her and put her back in the garage, the BMW hill climber is now outside under covers ,

my plans are..

1, remove bonnet and use the new replacement grille fixings to properly fix the grille , change the growler for a Gold one , and replace one bonnet hinge with a brand new complete hinge, as the hinge pin on one has broken ( always has been ) ,

2 , remove all the electrics to the inner wings of the engine bay , steam clean , carry out a couple of very minor repairs and paint the inner wings, and refit everything i removed

3 , remove the rear exhaust silencers and replace with the AJ6 engineering SS replacement pipes , this will give a little more BHP and make her sound a little racier , i got em for £90 on ebay , and are in perfect condition.

4, while the exhaust is out, i will replace the gearbox , i may use the one i have rebuilt, or i may remove, rebuild and refit my existing unit , don't know yet, will see how much damage there is in the box, and may make a good one out of the two while retaining original numbers etc , i have a full refurbishment kit waiting on the worktop already ,and new gearbox pumps can still be bought from jaguar for £120 ,

5 , go round the whole car touching up a few paint flaws and trims bits , after two years of running and around 8k miles

so , thats my winter planned out

what about yours ?

Looks like you will not be wondering what to do next for a while, but do allow your right arm a little time for the occasional tilt of the amber nectar.

'BMW Hillclinber' sounds interesting - is that Shelsley Special or similar?

oh , don't worry , regular Rugby at Gloucester sorts that out, lol

the BMW powered hill climber is a Wesfield inspired custom build using a BMW engine , gearbox , diff and all running gear ,

powder coated orange frame , engine , box and diff fitted and all suspension , and rolling on four wheels at the moment ,

but thats on the back burner unless you want to buy it

so , not going to plan , i have started the other way round , lol

car is now 1 mtr in the air on axle stands and ramps with several other axle stands ready to ' catch ' if required, rather that than be squashed :?

so with the car in the air, the front wheels are off , everything looks really good with some very minor bits to paint black to keep on top of things

the full exhaust system has been removed from the collector pipes backwards, the heat shield is out from under the middle and the prop shaft has been undone from the diff end ,

next will be to support the gearbox, and remove the gearbox mount, then the prop shaft will come out, i have a brand new prop shaft from jaguar to refit 8)

then remove all attachments to the gearbox ( vac pipe , kick down switch connector, selector cable and fill pipe tube along with the oil cooler pipe connections ,

then the front torque converter cover to allow access to the flywheel attachment bolts ,

then its time to struggle, lol

How about a helping hand to save rupturing every muscle in your body, Vince.

We don`t want a Broken Brake Buster, do we?

I've found that a motorbike lift works really well for supporting gearbox / rear cage etc.

Some small chance my friend! Where were you when I needed you last weekend.....I know. Having breakfast at Kemble!!

Lumping this heavy stuff around was ok when we were younger. Now somewhat older and more experienced we often find it difficult to lift our beer glasses. We are very fortunate to have the internet and ebay equivalents where we can buy the right kit to do a job and at the right price. As we know if you look hard enough someone has a tool that can take the load off a given job. What we would have given for such gear at these prices a few years ago.

Here is another gearbox lift unit to go on the top of a trolley jack. Looks the business for £135 or thereabouts. Might need one myself if I go ahead and fit a Jag 4.2 or 4.4 Range Rover block to J44. I have the urge, if not the strength.

BB,

I still think that a moyorbike lift will be cheaper and prove much more versatile for other work such as the rear cage, your son's motorbike etc.

As Mike says, prices seem to be constantly falling. I use a similar version to the one below which is £61. I oaud more for an equivalent over 10 years ago:

Oh, come on BB, Stop messing around with all that trivia. Surely now is the time to sort that garage roof ready for the arrival of the new lift in the Spring !

When you have done it you will wonder how you managed all those years with out it.

lol

now now,

i think the motorbike lift is a good alternative, however the transmission lift that Rich pointed out is available in the UK for £100 , and a new old stock one is ending today for £50 so far , and i have already refurbished the rear cage ( i did however use a hydraulic lifter that i borrowed from work for that ) , the sons bike is brand new and he takes it to the main agent at the moment for any work ,

the problem with the garage and the lift is that i put a new roof on it at the beginning of this summer, and this winter is the first one ever without a leak of any kind, so am reluctant to strip it all and put more blocks on the walls, the other thing is that the 2 poster i want to get will actually fit in my existing garage as it is , and can be taken outside if needed for full height lifting
, and the 2 poster can be used for lifting the motorbike if needed

so

i will be rolling around on the concrete for a while yet , lol

more progress ,

only spending a couple of hours each evening taking it slowly and methodically

so , i now have the sensor and sensor mounting plate ( marelli ) removed from in front of the gearbox

the gear selector cable, the kick down switch connection , a heat shield , module vac pipe and drained the transmission fluid and removed all of the sump bolts , to allow the maximum amount of fluid to drain...

the transmission cooler pipes need to be undone from the box ,

next will be to remove the starter motor and get a jack under the gearbox ( with sump refitted ) and remove the gearbox support , i will also have to place a jack or axle stand under the back of the engine to stop it rocking backwards once the gearbox mount is removed

getting there slowly

more progress over the last two days

gearbox is now supported on a low scissor gearbox jack, and the engine is supported on a beam ,

the rear gearbox support has been removed , and then the prop shaft ,
the starter motor is out and the bolts for the torque converter have been removed using a 15mm socket on a short knuckle bar and turning the fly wheel with a large screwdriver on the teeth against the case , very fiddly and time consuming.....

talking of the starter motor, as she is a 1989 car she has as standard the gear reduction starter motor fitted, the top bolt is different from the bottom bolt, and you need a 12 point 7/16 socket to be able to remove it , while on your back, looking over the gearbox in a cold garage, still, its cheaper than paying someone else to get cold doing the work.....

one thing i did find to my horror was the rear gearbox to prop shaft flange bolts were all loose !! , there are nylon nuts on each bolt , but each bolt was not tight by 1mm or so , resulting in a sloppy fitting prop shaft that would knock when picking up the drive , especially reverse, but worse than that the fixing bolt holes have become elongated ( by 1mm or slightly less ) rendering the flanges useless, luckily i have a brand new prop shaft, and my rebuilt transmission has a perfectly good flange plate , so no panics , but i will need four new bolts , and they are a fiver each....ah well

all thats left now is to remove the gearbox to engine block bolts and remove from the car
