Won't Unlock?

Postby XJR-S » Mon Nov 24, 2014 9:58 am

Frosty morning. Very frosty as I had to borrow the wifes car as the jag wouldn't unlock... Remote hadn't been programmed yet but the key has always been fine. Seems to turn left but not right.

Last time I drove it, I did manually lock it inside as I was in a dodgy area.... But it kept unlocking itself. Has it got confused about which way around it is? Any suggestions to get into it? Kind of desperate...!

Thanks!

Oh yes, and I’m moving house on Thursday, so pretty important I get into it!

It also means the majority of my tools are boxed up, I’ve only got access to the basics, spanners and screw drivers. I might just have to call the RAC, as much as that pains me. They will have the door wedges/air bags that I’ll need, unless there are better suggestions!

XJR-S,

Sorry to hear of the problem. When the XJS unlocks itself immediately after being locked, it's usually because of incorrect tension on the adjuster rods from the chrome lever to the lock mechanism. (Not that this helps you right now!)

The drivers key should turn Anti-Clockwise to unlock. So if you can do that it should be unlocking? Silly question, but where are the chrome levers? Are you sure that it isn't unlocked but the outside handle is just a bit frozen?

What about about unlocking from the passenger door? Or using a hairdryer on both door locks?

If all else fails, one desperate chance could be to try and unlock the boot, then disconnect the battery, leave for a while and then reconnect, hoping that it suddenly unlocks everything. It might turn the alarm on though! But you're already in a mess anyway!

Good luck

Thanks for the response! Passenger door is the same, turns anticlockwise, but nothing happens. You are right, I think I need to check the interior lock position, which I think is probably in the wrong position, hence my issue. Probably my fault from getting frustrated with it not staying locked whilst I was in traffic the other day.

I did try defrosting it, probably did more harm that good with a kettle first thing in the morning, must flush the locks through with WD40 tonight! I tried dipping the key in boiling water then popping it in the lock, but it was clearly moving anticlockwise. I just couldn’t remember which way it should’ve been going.

I just hope it’s not deadlocked in position and popping the door out will let me unlock it. Might try the boot again before doing anything else, trouble is that lock is temperamental at best anyway!

I can’t even borrow some wheel dollies to move the car (Oh yeah, I’m only moving house 40 yards…) because the drive and road is gravel and uneven.

Will have a quick look and get onto the RAC tonight.

XJR-S,

There is something weird going on if both locks will turn Anti-clockwise. This is because A-C on the drivers door = unlock, but A-C on the passenger door = lock! (It's about how the lock direction moves the remote levers.) To unlock you want A-C on drivers or Clockwise on passenger.

Suggestion: Add £15k on price of the house and leave the car!

Well..... <cowers in embarembarrassment> it was fine when I got in tonight. Must have been ice in the locks, despite the kettle of water and preheated key I was using...!

My wife was happy with the idea of leaving it behind!

XJR-S,

We've all been there! Glad it got sorted.

It reminded me (with a rather sickening feeling) of the very embarrassing time that I had a 1962 Vauxhall Victor FB when I was 18. A freezing cold morning and with locks frozen I was already late for work. With no time to go back into the house and get a bottle of hot water, I decided to kneel down and breathe into the door lock to try and defrost it. Unfortunately, I just touched my lips against the freezing cold metal of the door handle and felt my mouth immediately stick! In a moment of huge panic at the thought of being stuck, kneeling in the road and appearing to passionately kiss my car (or worse?), I immediately wrenched backwards. This left the skin of my lips stuck on the car door handle! Have you any idea of how painful are torn lips and how much blood comes out them? A LOT! (I am shuddering here just remembering it!) I didn't get to work that day and my mouth took days to scab over and recover! I have never breathed on a car lock since that day....

Oh God!!!!!! That's terrible!! We all did things with our first car at 17 or 18. I over filled mine with oil and blew the piston rings. Had to fit another engine! Also I learnt a great respect for rwd cars on damp roads, a lesson I've taken for granted until I had a brief moment in the jag last month.

I was just giving her a once over tonight and noticed the rear drivers seat base was wet. Popped it out to find 3" of water underneath it. That explains the ice inside the car!
