Same Old Temp Gauge Problem - Different Cause???

Postby shed » Wed Mar 07, 2007 10:50 pm

All,

Following a drastic loss of coolant traced to corrosion, I've just had my '94 4.0 AJ16 radiator re-cored. No problems there.

Prior to this work being carried out, the temp gauge had always responded well from cold, and always sat at "N" once warm (something of a luxury judging by some of the other posts here...!). It even had the decency to go towards "H" when stuck in traffic during last years hot weather, leading to an even greater sense of faith in its abilities.

However, since getting the reconditioned rad in, the temp gauge now takes a long time to move, and never, on even the longest journey, moves much above "C".

My initial thought is that this must be a coincidental thermostat failure, so I'll have that changed.

My question to you all is, coincidence, or possibly something more sinister? Also, how difficult a job is it to get to the gauges to clean the connections?

Thanks in advance.
Ed.

I'd agree that the thermostat sounds a likely candidate.

As for the gauge, I think the temp sender is a much more likely culprit. It wouldn't harm to disconnect the terminal, clean everything up, apply a light oil (some recommend olive oil for this purpose) and see if it makes a difference?

I agree re. a possible 'stat problem. As you've probably realised the minor gauges in facelift cars can be less than exemplary in their behaviour. However, they are quite easy to get to. The manual actually describes the removal of the pod quite well.

Good luck,
