Has anyone with a later xjs with lambda sensors suffered from the duff petrol from the supermarkets?
I only use one of the big name suppliers since being involved many years ago in fuel forecourt maintenance. The supermarkets have for a long time been using an ethanol blend, nothing wrong in that, but the daily housekeeping standards always left a lot to be desired IMO.

I only use Shell, having had an account at my local garage for many years since I was self-employed.
Honest John in the Motoring section of the Daily Telegraph has been banging on for years about poor quality supermarket fuel........
Things have improved, but I had to laugh at one TV interviewee today, this guy had a new-ish Merc, I guess about forty grands worth, but he was buying his fuel at the local supermarket to save 1.2559p per litre, cost him £1300.00

Tesco have been selling a 99 octane fuel for some while. It's a higher octane rating as it contains some bio-ethanol. My '89 V12 has Marelli ignition so I can pull a plug which changes the timing so it can run on this super juice - goes like s**t off a shovel!!
Under the Renewable Fuels Directive, all automotive fuels will eventually have to contain at least 5% from a renewable source. This will probably be bio-ethanol derived from fermented wheat or sugar beet and bio-diesel derived from rape-seed oil. This is good news for both the environment and British farmers (my day job).
Please keep supporting this excellent initiative - it's better for the environment, keeps us sons of the soil in a job and makes your car go faster!!

No fair - my local tesco still only sells crappy 97. What is the premium in price for the super duper 99? They said is was going to be ~4p. Is that true?
Heres an interesting one that goes against the usual reports - my XJS did not like the petrol from my local Shell garage, it was very definitely more prone to detonation than when running on supermarket fuel. However, the pumps at the garage in question always appeared rather tatty and run down so I wonder if poor housekeeping was a factor. The garage itself has since shut down.

I used to always just go for the cheapest but I'm sure I used to get a small amount of pinking on the cheap stuff?
So now I've moved to BP and Shell.
However I don't know if I'm imaging things but the Shell seems to give off this horrible oily smell when the car is ticking over on the drive. (weird)
Just out of curiosity what octane should I be looking for and how does it effect the running on my 3.6 coupe?
I never took any notice before. I just filled it with unleaded
