cylinder head compatibility cross model 3.6

Postby Brakebuster » Sun Aug 31, 2014 9:52 pm

as some of you know, i'm going to change the head gasket on Phil's 3.6 xis ( 1991 ) ,

the head is as yet in an unknown condition, however there is an opportunity of a NOS head on ebay , but the part number of EAC7077 doesn't come up for the XJS but for the XJ40 with the 3.6 fitted

in anyones experience, will this head fit with zero issues ??

if there are differences , what would they be ??

as they still sell them new at Jaguar for not a lot more , but the ebay one is ' cheap '

any and all advice welcome

btw, the valve seal will be done, so the shims set, this just leaves the cams and bearing shells to swap to the new head, and lap the valves in

There was an article in the magazine about fitting a head from the AJ16 onto the AJ6 block a while ago and I put an entry on the BB asking WHY anyone would want to do that. Perhaps it is superior in some way? It was selling at the time for £200 with cams and valvegear, so perhaps that was the reason as you could not do a recon job on the original head for that. Sadly got no enlightening response. Might fit your block too?

I think the main difference between AJ16 & AJ6 cylinder heads are the exhaust manifold studs are in different places. I'm pretty sure everything else will fit inc camshafts, rocker cover etc.

nothing to do with the AJ16 ,

BB - Yes it is, but it has to be the correct VIN. There were three varients according to the parts list EBC11327, NBB2510BA and NBB2510CA. The later two relate to 4 bolt and 7 bolt exhaust Manifold stud varients. According to JDHT Parts.

Hope this helps

thanks

just what i needed to look out for

the head in question was for a '91 xj40 XJ6 , and the head to be replaced is a '91 XJs

so they should be the same........

BB,

I don't recognise EAC7077 at all but I THINK the following is true:

- xj40 & xjs 3.6 heads are the same
- ebc11327 is a bare head without cam or valves
- 3.6 and early 4.0 aj6 bare heads are the same. It's the cams and valves that are different.

YoU can buy a complete 4.0 head with cams and valves for £180. Bargain! Phone David Marks and see if ghere's a problem putting that on a 3.6 block.
