New gearbox?

Postby cullywoo » Fri Aug 22, 2014 8:35 am

Hello all,

In order to fix my fire damaged mk2 I will be taking out engine and gearbox. Although both work well thinking of making best of opportunity. It's a 68 car but has old per syncromesh gearbox, which is a bit a pain. I'd quite like to upgrade to age appropriate syncromesh gearbox. Any ideas where I might find a good reconditioned one (mod)?

Also any thoughts on 5 speed gearbox upgrade - good purchase or not?

Equally if anyone has any suggestions on thungs I should/could get done while engine out would be appreciated.

Thanks
Adam

There has been another post on here discussing gearboxes with some very good points raised, at 1968 I would have thought you already had the full syncro box in?? I have a reconditioned box in now for 10 years and I think it is very good. Depends how deep your pockets are, I have very short arms!

Hi Adam

There is a great thread running on this forum under the Modifications and Upgrades section where just this subject is being discussed. Have a look at that to get you started.

You'll probably get a lot of good advice and valid opinions but at the final reckoning its about what you want to get out of it and what you are prepared to spend. Whatever you do you'll still have a great car.

Thanks, spotted the thread. I suspect I'd rather the 4sp synchromesh, just don't know where to find a good one.
