I have just repaired a broken spade connector to the rev counter generator the problem is i am not sure i connected the terminals to it correctly because it now does not work i have tried changing the terminals around to no avail could i have damaged the rev counter by a wrong polarity connection.
cheers jim

Re: Rev Counter
Hello Jim, you can not damage it, as you say, it is driven by an AC generator from the back of the inlet cam. Try a voltmeter on it on tick over, on AC range! it should show about 6 volts.

Re: Rev Counter
Sorry for the thread hijack but didn't seem worth starting a new one.
My rev counter stopped working last night.
I have connected my multimeter across the outlet connections on the AC generator as suggested by Ken above, and get 48 ohms resistance at standstill and no voltage at all when running.
Is there anything I can try before shelling out for a new generator?
Nigel.

Re: Rev Counter
Hello Nigel,
it's worth removing it and checking the drive, however, it is a long time since I saw one and can't remember if there is an interim drive dog\key that may have worn or broken? Taking it off is the best way of determining what needs doing.

Re: Rev Counter
Morning Alec.
Have got the generator out.
It seems very stiff to turn. I would have thought it should spin easily.
The drive on the generator looks OK but the drive from the cam feels a bit 'uneven'.
Cam cover off for a better look?

Re: Rev Counter
Hi, Nigel,
There is an adapter which screws into the end of the right hand camshaft, part no. C16771. As Alec has suggested, into this is inserted a nylon 'Drive Dog', C25426, and this has the rectangular slot into which the peg on the end of the generator is inserted. When my rev counter recently failed it was because the slot in the drive dog had become chewed up and enlarged, preventing the rotation of the camshaft to be precisely transmitted to the generator. This is easily ascertained by removing the the cam cover and rear camshaft retainer and using a mirror.
If it is this, and the drive dog has to be replaced (they're about £10 - a lot for a small piece of plastic, I suppose), you may find the new item is a tight fit (it needs to be) and may need slightly filing to get it to fit properly into the adapter.
Cheers,

Re: Rev Counter
Cheers Neil.
The drive piece looks slightly deformed, probably due to the generator being very stiff to turn.
Don't think it is bad enough to need replacement though.
You are the second person today to suggest a mirror, very handy indeed. I must get my own.....Mrs.H not too impressed with oily fingers on her makeup stuff
New/recon generator on it's way to me for tomorrow.
Hopefully get it fitted and tested and all will be well.
