I've a feeling that my auxiliary heater isn't working. On cold mornings when I would expect it to be on it isn't. That car takes a long time to warm up but runs at normal temperature once it does.
Firstly, does anyone know when the heater should fire up? I thought it was when the climate control was set to "Auto" and the outside temperature was below about 5 degrees.
Secondly, does anyone have any knowledge of these heaters and why it wouldn't come on and how I can test it.
Thanks
David

Re: Diesel Auxiliary heater not working
It's temp below 8°C OAT and cooling system temp below 76°C. The heater then runs at full power. When coolant temp reaches 87°C it runs at half power and shuts off at 90°C.
If it fails to start and run correctly three times it is then locked out. If the supply voltage is less than 10.25V it will also fail to run. There are over 30 fault codes associated with the heater, including a shutdown when the fuel level gets too low
It can be reset using IDS/SDD which has a prime and run function, if you have invested £50 in a mongoose cable.

Al - thanks for the info.
Where did you get your Mongoose cable for £50? I've been looking at these but prices appear to be £400-£500. On top of that, I'd need to get the JLR software from Topix?
Regards
David

I got my mongoose from a site on US ebay. It's not up just at the moment, but it was about $75 and came with two DVDs.
These had version 131 of the software and instructions for running it without a TOPIX subscription.
Rather than me attempt and fail to explain all the ins and outs, have a read of the thread on this site:
http://www.jaguarforum.co.uk/f32/how-lo ... 47261.html
One of the posts there has links to the training manuals = the software is not very intuitive; backward compatibility with discontinued computer hardware seeming to have been more important to its designers, but it does do the job.

Thanks Al
I've ordered one from a US website. $69.95 with free shipping. This is £42.60 in real money.
Comes with the latest software version (134). I'll report back when it arrives and I've given it a try!!

Re: Diesel Auxiliary heater not working
Al,
I have been thinking for some about about investing in a Mongoose. I know from all the other discussion sites of the various difficulties of installation, depending on the software version. Do you know if the v134 will install and run ok without IDS subscription. The obd2tool.com website is rather vague about it. I had dropped them an email but they are on holiday at present.
Any thoughts or opinions gratefully received.
Paul

My experience is limited to version 131, but somewhere on that massively long thread above, someone, Cambo, I think, indicates at which point the software protection changed. Up to that point the IDS/SDD can be run with the ID and password supplied by the vendor. After that you need the TOPIX subscription.
You also have to reset the date on the laptop to October 2012 (or earlier). In practice I've not found this to be a problem but some people had difficulty installing the software. I suspect but can't prove that this was because they didn't install it in the right order or tried to be clever and only install some of it, or tried to install it with a 64 bit operating system (it will only work with 32 bit) or used windows 7 or (even worse) 8 &c.
Another point is that there are enough people out there who will reseed the torrent which will allow you to download earlier versions of the application and install that if the supplied software doesn't deliver. Unfortunately few of them seem to be members of the JEC.
Once you have it up and running it does take a bit of getting used to. I only discovered recently that if you get a warning light and the restricted performance message, you have to enter both symptoms (and finding the warning light one in the symptoms list is a challenge all by itself) for the diagnostics to work properly.

Re: Diesel Auxiliary heater not working
Al,
Tks for your input. I've now found a site with a zip file of v131, so I think I'll go ahead and order the cable. I guess I'll be able to find a username and password for v131 somewhere online as well.
Cheers

Re: Diesel Auxiliary heater not working
Hi, I have just come across your discussion regarding the Auxiliary Heater not working and have some ideas for you to try. The Heater is a Webasto unit which if you go onto their web site may be a useful start for you, but initially I would check the following:
1, Climate Control is set to Auto as it will not run otherwise.
2, You should also ensure that you have more than 1/4 tank of fuel, as again it will not fire up.
3, Check that the Heater Fuel Pump is operating - this located within the fuel tank and is seperate to the Engine lift Pump.
Normally Webasto Heaters only require power to be removed from them to to in order reset them, a Battery disconnect may do it.
I hope this helps.
Regards
Dave

Re: Diesel Auxiliary heater not working
Dave - thanks for your post. Yes I was aware that the climate control has to be set to auto and the tank should be above 1/4 full.
I looked at resetting by pulling the fuse but could find no reference anywhere to which one it was.. Remember when car manufacturers would do something helpful like putting a table of fuses on the top of the fuse box cover?
Anyway, might try disconnecting the battery for a while.
Hoping my new Mongoose lead will arrive this week and that will help.
Regards
David
