Smallest XJS garage?

Postby XJR-S » Sun Jan 12, 2014 11:20 pm

Tucked away at last.... Finally finished a big project on my other car, then my wife's rear brakes, now the jag is tucked away. Hopefully properly dry out so I can work on the leak in the boot. It doesn't take kindly to my forward sloping drive way. Collects water in the top corners of the boot seal and drains in through the seam. Seam sealer?

Anyway, I have the smallest garage and the biggest car. Not a clever mix... Does anyone have a smaller garage?!

The clearance at the back is the same as the front. Yes, the bonnet does open. Just.

Take no notice of the hammerite and filler...That's for the ford!

Before buying our previous-but-two XJ6 Series III, I carefully checked it would fit in our prefab garage. But it didn't fit, 'cos of a tow bar the previous owner had. I hacked a hole in the garage wall!

Getting out must be a struggle - hope you have a piece of carpet on the wall for the door to open against, although I did see a photo of a tighter garage but luckily the door into the house was exactly right so the driver could open the car door through it for access and exit.

Developers seem to have decided that garages are used for lawnmowers and junk and reduced the width so that anything bigger than a Mini or Fiesta lives outside.

I can get my Sierra in the garage with no issues, had it on four stands last week and changed the whole rear axle and full exhaust. It's the length of the Jag that's the issue. As the mirrors are smaller, it actually feels like its narrower than the Sierra.

The real issue is, doing any meaningful work on the car is going to be futile, without removing the shelving unit at the back (or the rear bumper?). I've literally got 15mm at each end, max. So I can't even jack it up, as my big garage jack will lift it back as you raise it. Will see if I can find a home for the bonnet, remove that to do some work.

Getting out wasn't too bad surprisingly, I usually reverse my cars in, but was too scared to reverse the jag in, so ironically the foam padding is on the opposite wall. I will rectify that this weekend and pad both sides.

That is a bit of a squeeze, I don't think that I have seen a smaller garage for one our favourite cars.
Of course it is all down to the Government's size criteria for the dimensions of garages on private houses, 16'-6'' x 7'-6" I think.
You could alleviate some of the water leaking into the boot by putting a polyethylene tarpaulin over the car. I always keep a cover over my cars too when they are tucked up for the winter.
Coopers of Stortford sell them. The size to fit a XJR-S Jaguar is £19.99 + post. Also a set of 4 elastic bungees are £2.99 and good value they are too.
As Paul E says, it will also help to stop the paintwork getting chipped to put carpet strips on the walls at waist height.
