EU regulations regarding solvent based products

Postby mickywillis » Sun Aug 06, 2006 11:32 pm

Not sure if members here are aware of this, but as of Jan 2007, there will be no more availability of solvent based paints and products.
So this means no more cellulose paints, either in aerosol or tins, no more touch up paints, hammerite, contact adhesive etc, etc.
This means that DIY restorers will no longer be able to do minor or major bodywork repairs using cellulose, acrylic and presumably enamel type paints. 2 pack is way over the use of DIYers unless you have breathing apparatus, the only option will be water based paints, but these will take forever and a day to air dry (unless you can create an oven in the garage!)
Anyone got any feelings about this? Brussels doesn't want us to do our own repairs any more, so be prepared to star losing a lot more than just paint (think about glues, body fillers, cleaning products, etc)
It will also have a detrimental effect on the smaller parts of the motor trade, like the small 2 man garages that offer "minor body repairs" or even anyone involved in othe hobbies such as modelling and the marine industry.

you are correct ....to a point,

no longer available from retail outlets , but you will be able to go to trade outlets to buy these products,

you may have to set up an account, but that doesnt cost anything to do , and you will prolly get better discounts on most things you buy as well,

and you get 30 days to pay........ 8)

it will be more difficult to obtain these products, but thats the point, to keep em out of the hands of ' abusers '

as for water based products, they are out there now, and most if not all car manufacturers have been using em to paint their cars for several years now

Right of course but I doubt the withdrawal of cellulose paint will lead to insurrection. Does seems absolutely crazy given the amount of the stuff we consume. As per Vince’s suggestion I guess we will all be setting up trade accounts.

On the other hand if it means getting theses WMDs out of the hands of the graffiti artists. Logically should apply to all paints solvents and marker pens for the under 21s (or even older)!!!
