Hi all,
earlier this year I purchased by chance find a pretty sorry but reasonably solid (I hope!) mk2. Ive not had much chance to do anything with it yet but am going to make a start shortly.
Can anyone tell me if there is any other place on the body of the car that I can find some identification of some kind? because there is no data tag in the engine bay nor can I seem to see a vin stamping where I understand it is supposed to be. But I havn't removed the paint in that area yet so it could be obscured I guess.
Thanks!
hello new member with mk2 and a lot of work to do!

Hi
Open the bonnet and to the right of the catch, there should be a serial number, under the rear seat, think its the right but could be the left there should be a plate with the body number. Engine number can be found in the block, beside where the oil filter is mounted.

thanks I'll have a good look - have the rear seat up but didn't notice anything there before but will look again.
Can I ask another question - were the cars in the factory painted with a kind of red oxide primer before the colour coat? Pretty sure my car was black or a very dark blue originally, but I see signs under this of a red sort of colour so trying to figure out if that is primer?
thanks

When I brought mine home the outer panels (what was left of them) consisted of rust, grey primer, dark green and dulux black (or similar).
