Newbie Checking In From Leeds

Postby giblet » Thu Apr 25, 2013 2:26 pm

Hey up folks. I'm a newly registered member. Picked a 1998 X308 XJR a few weeks ago, bought it on a whim from a local car auction so lets see how it goes! Not sure what the average age of a X308 owner is, but I'm 25 so I may have brought it down a tad

Welcome Giblet from the Sunny Orkney Isles (today anyway!)
These 308 folk seem a friendly enough bunch but they often tell you things that might hurt your wallet. There will be lots of things you will probably want to check on your car but there is a wealth of knowledge amongst the membership.
Was the Auction the one at John of Gaunt, Rothwell? I bought my first (ex met police) Moggy Minor from there in the 60's for £42 so you can guess I'm a bit older that you!

Best Regards,
Ian :D

Hi Giblet,
Nice of you to join and say hello. Good to have another "youngster" about, I'm 35 so you beat me by some way.

Thanks for the warm welcome. The auction house was in Rothwell, could be the same site but trading under a different name?

I had done some reading up on the X308 XJR before buying this one. Only trouble with buying from an auction is not knowing the history etc prior to bidding. In the end it seems to have turned out ok. The car ticked over to 102k on my first drive in it, good amount of stamps in the service book. It has a slight chirp/rattle on idle which was initially thought to be the upper tensioners but after taking the cam covers off it seems that both the upper and lower tensioners have been replaced.

The car is off into The Jag Specialist in Doncaster tomorrow for a service and a few other bits. Once that is done I can work my way through the to do list which currently includes a darn good clean, the hubs and calipers could do with a coat of hammerite and the sagging headlining needs seeing to.

I'm still getting used to the performance of the car, the closest thing I have owned to this was my Galant VR4 which was a twin turbo V6. The power delivery of the XJR is completely different, it's my first RWD car too which is fun.

Hi Giblet,
I to use the jag specialist in Armthorpe and find him very good. Did you also consider going along to your local region. Yours would be Yorkshire-Riding in Wakefield. You will meet lots of like minded people and like here on the forum, you'll find help when needed.

Hi Gordon. I'm planning on attending the local region meet once the car has had a good clean up. Would feel a tad out of place to turn up in a dirty car! Hoping to get a call tomorrow to let me know when the car will be ready to collect from Jag Specialist. Once I have it back I can get working on the clean up. Then I can think about a few mods like the lower pulley and an exhaust.

308 owners don't get any older looking, its the stress of being a 308 owner that makes them appear old..........

You can say that again! I missed out on the Northern meet due to a fluid leak which made itself known on the brand new driveway, thankfully all is well now after a replacement oil cooler was fitted. I'm hoping to attend the regional meet next month, just before the 1000 mile round trip to Spa Francorchamps for the F1.
