clutch replacement 1969 Jaguar 240

Postby mightyman52 » Sun Apr 28, 2013 1:08 pm

I sourced an 8.5" diaphram clutch kit (pressure plate, thrust bearing, clutch cover) as per the Manuals specification. When I stripped out the old clutch I found it to be an old 2.4 9" coil spring cover, pressure plate and thrust bearing.
The locating holes in the fly wheel are to suit a 9" clutch and not the 8.5" clutch kit I purchased.
Would anybody advise re-drilling the fly wheel to accomodate the 8.5" kit or should I purchase a new 9" diaphram kit. In any case would I need to have the flywheel balanced.
Should an 80mm slave cylinder or a 95mm slave cylinder be fitted for this set up? :?

I can't comment on the 2.4 ltr engine as I haven't got one, but when I rebuilt my 3.8 ltr I wanted to fit a diaphragm clutch for light action and less effort. I was advised against it as an increase in power would make the diaphragm clutch wear out sooner!! I fitted an E type coil spring clutch that was so heavy I had to servo it in the end.

I would suggest that if you are not uprating the engine much the diaphragm clutch would be fine, but it would really need balancing anyway to stop vibration and wear of the rear bearing. In my case they balanced the lot crank, flywheel, clutch (found to be poorly balanced) damper and pulley plus rods and pistons as it was in bits.

Best of luck
