squeeling noise

i have a 2000 xkr ,69000 mls.first thing in the morning on start up the engine screeches (like a slipping fan belt ) 2 minutes later the noise stops ??????? any ideas or help would be welcome ...thanks

this is the classic sign if an old ' serpentine ' drive belt on the front of the engine

this time of year with the cold mornings etc the belt is stiffer than normal , this is also due to age , and the belt will slip and cause the automatic tensioner to knock and slip ,

a new belt will remedy the noise , also think about a new tensioner as well, about £25 for the belt , and ten mins to fit , and around £60 for the tensioner and about a further twenty mins to fit before the new belt goes on

AS BB suggests it sounds like the belt , new style belt requires the later tensioner try British Parts for a bit of a deal ,

I`ve just done a belt change on my V8 S-type which is to all intents, virtually has the same power unit as an XK.

If you go to the S-type BB section, then "cooling" and look for "4 litre thermostat tower mod and fitting", you will find towards the later posts my description of the job together with photographs.

There is another reason that causes such noises - water (coolant) leaks

Look around the engine bay to see if there are signs of recent leakage

If this is the cause, sometimes it clears within about a month otherwise it's a new belt, tensioner & idle wheel (get latest versions to stop future problems)

back in December 2012 I had a new ancillary belt fitted to my 1997 XK8 convertibe at 101Kmiles
During the winter the car has been used approx once per week and I get the sqeeling noise on start up this lasts for around a minute sometimes along with a slight knocking noise then the all the noises disappear.

I read the earlier post but they seem to relate to old belts not a newly fitted one

I have also had a warning on the dash at the same time saying "low oil pressure" which immediatley disappears as soon as the engine is revved. I noted this morning also a red light in the oil pressure guage and the guage moving from low to the middle.

Once the car is moving and starting to warm up the engine sounds very smooth with no noises (Tensions etc have all been recently changed)

One cold winter many years ago

A twin cam engine with cam belt that also drove the water pump

Tried to start the engine, nothing moved, like siezed, then it turned over but no start

Examination revealed no anti freeze, frozen solid water pump, snapped cam belt, bent valves

Hi,
I'd suggest getting a specialist to examine the car. It will probably be necessary to leave it overnight to repeat the symptoms you have described. Without seeing the car naturally it's difficult to be sure but it does sound like you may have a failed VVT unit which is causing the oil pressure and noise issues. Mike.
