Wanted : XJS 4.0 couple manual.

Postby david340 » Mon Jan 14, 2013 3:40 pm

Hi returning to the Jag fold after a few months away and seeking my first XJS !

Looking for an AJ16 manual 4.0 coupe, prefer celebration.

Anything considered so long as its a manual box.

I am a private buyer wish cash waiting and space in my garage for the right car.

Please PM with any details / leads etc

Regards.

Dave

May be wrong as I'm no expert on the detailed history of the XJS, but I have always understood that they were only made with an auto box, but have you driven an auto one? The auto suits the car perfectly but wafting along in comfort and silence has to be what appeals. If you are into cornering on the limit and playing tunes on the gearbox perhaps a car which has been modified may be the best answer for you. I have met several owners who were thinking as you are until they drove an auto one and became immediate converts to the more sedate way of travel.

Hello all,
Auto box is very good on these, IMHO. However, manual options were available;

Cheers, Rich

The autobox with the J gate is great because you can still run up and down the gears quite easily; the best trick is to learn to left foot brake so that you can keep the revs up.
It also has a 1st gear lock out for slippery conditions and switchable sports mode for more spirited driving.
It is way better than the old 3 speed slush box.

Apologies for the double posts, something weird going on somewhere.
Apologies for the deliberate error which you have probably spotted already; my XJS doesn't have a J gate, that was the XJR!
Still easy to change gear though, just no clutch pedal involved.

XJS AJ16 cars with a manual box are quite rare, but worth the wait to find one imo, as regulars on here know I love manual Jags, I have manual 300's, XJR's and n/a cars, they drive completely differently to an auto, I love them, so seek out a manual XJS if that is what you want, you WILL enjoy it

Thanks all for the advice etc.

Just out of interest - if I sourced an auto that was a good buy, what's involved in converting to manual if I couldnt live with it ?

Is it a case of get the bits from a scrapper and swap over or is it not worth the hassle, ecu problems etc etc that might crop up.

Regards.

Dave

There are several companies around that can either supply all the parts or do the job for you, depending on how far that you want to go and how much that you want to spend!
Check out KWE, Simply Performance or Hyper Performance as a starting point.

you will need, gearbox, clutch assembly, flywheel, ecu, pedal box, master cylinder and pipe work, possibly a propshaft, ski slope, and some other odds and ends I have probably forgotten

a manual 300 may throw up most of the these parts, a cross check of part nos with JH would confirm but I think a manual XJS 4.0 ecu is unique to XJS, would need to check

I have seen two auto XJR's converted to manuals, so it can be done, and, I'm sure the racing boys can do it with their eyes shut!!

Pity you weren't looking last month! I just sent off to the scrapper, a 1995 XJ6 Sport with manual gearbox, had it advertised on here, no takers, and as I'm in Canada, and the car was clogging up mother in law's driveway, it had to go. I got £500 for it from a Jag recycler, who would probably sell you the gearbox and ancillaries for a couple of grand!

Hi Dave,

I have a facelift ('92) five speed manual straight six XJS which I may be up for selling.

It is carnival red with cream leather interior, a two owner car with FSH only 45,000 on the clock from new. It comes with refurbished five spoke alloys and the option of the colour coded TWR body kit. It is in great shape, has been waxoiled underneath so is very solid.

Minus points are that some bits of lacquer have flaked off and there is some cracking on the veneer of the centre console. Headlining sagging in places. Air-con not working, but I have just had the heating system sorted (inc. new control unit) so it probably just needs a re-gas.

As you will be aware a low mileage 4.0L, factory manual is quite a rare beast, which is why I couldn't resist buying it, but storage issues mean that I might be up for selling for the right price.

I'm near Rochdale, Lancashire. Drop me a line if you're interested.

Best regards,

Bob.
