How do you identify a 4.2 E-type box?

Postby PhilBell » Tue Aug 28, 2012 11:09 pm

Does anyone know if all Jaguar 4.2 4-speed manual gearboxes are the same or do E-types use different ratios from other Jaguars?

If there are incorrect gearboxes to avoid, how can I verify an E-type 4.2 box?

hi, the 2 easiest ways to identify if its an etype box is by the length of the box as an etype box is shorter than the others, you would have to have the propshaft cut down to put a non etype box in. The other way is by the numbers on the box. regards oz

The series 2 box differed from the 4.2 series one in a number of ways and all were an improvement, these changes ranged from syncromesh through to the angle of the helix on the gears themselves, thus providing greater tooth contact for strength. As far as I know the only way to tell between series 1 4.2 and series 2 is by the number stamped on it.
