XJS factory fitted sunroof , mystery solved..........

Postby Brakebuster » Mon Aug 27, 2012 12:32 pm

though some ( most ) may say that Jaguar never fitted a sunroof to the XJS in the factory , i have one, and to add to the debate i have a copy of the original assembly line build sheet from the factory outlining a sunroof fitting, amongst other options ,

so , onto the point in hand,

it was never clear what manufacturer provided sunroofs to Jaguar at this time, and for the XJS ,

well ,

while dismantling the car for her repaint starting Monday next week , i found one, just the one brand name on my sunroof kit , this was stamped into a metal trim for the aperture holding the roof lining material , at the front , it says

Webasto..... 8)

as none of the spares are available from Jaguar , even though the whole kit is listed in the parts manual , i will now be able to source spare parts if required , such as runner buffers etc, but at the moment , and being really lucky , its fully working with no broken parts at all

i do need to recover the inner sliding shade , but that is an easy job

btw , its a fully electric , smoked GLASS tilt and sliding sunroof with inner sunshade and polished stainless aperture trim on the roof, and from looking at the webasto site, its a fully loaded version for that year..

with regard to redoing the roof lining , the standard biscuit replacement will not fit in my car because of the sunroof cassette and the front electric motor , this is housed in a bespoke metal frame that the courtesy light also sits in , so its a glue in loose material roof lining , which will be done while the glass is still out ,

Interesting stuff - I've never seen a coupe with a sunroof before. Do you have any pics?

here is a picture before restoration began , in fact the actual day i bought her
Image

there is no biscuit base to that headlining, its simply stretched and glued material ,you can just see the sunroof motor cover top right of the picture

Thanks.

There doesn't appear to be an emergency crank bolt to close the roof in the event of motor failure - or is it cleverly disguised? Also, where is the open\tilt\close button?

Sorry, so many questions - just curious...

lol, no worries

yes , there is an emergency crank , its under the motor cover trim , and the crank tool is actually in the tool kit , and is supplied as an original part , which i still have , which is a surprise , lol , the motor cover trim is easily removed with a half turn with a coin etc ,

the tilt slide button is on the ski-slope in between the window buttons, i have a ' 3 gang ' switch bezel , instead of a ' 2 gang ' one just for windows , and i use a ' roof ' labelled rocker switch which matches the window switches

if you have a Jaguar parts manual ( the green one ) all the sunroof parts are on the last pages of that book , or on the heritage parts site ( same info )

Tis is true, the factory did offer a sunroof in the Coupe XJS.

I recall including the details into the Type Approval documents so I'll have to dig them out and have a look at what I have on file in the office sometime.

Good to see at least one survive as they are no doubt rare.

Regards,

Mike

Is the car painted yet? When I called to collect the downpipe you said it was about to be done. I loved the interior colour.

Kels,

the XJS is going to the body shop on Monday , and should be there for three to four weeks , for a full and proper repaint

will put some pics up when she is done

and i think the interior was the main thing that stopped me buying another one in better condition , though it didnt make financial sense , but i will have an original spec car with matching production numbers when all is finished

My 1989 v12 coupe has an electric glass tilt/slide sunroof. I'm not sure if it's original or not but it looks like it. Sounds like its pretty rare!

great news, the way to tell is if the front material retaining bar that you can see with the roof slid back should say 'WEBASTO ' right on the edge in the middle ,

the other thing i have noticed after digging out the trim for recovering , is that i have a large cloth cover rear window trim , its the same shape as the upper ' D ' and as big as the whole window surround, funny thing is i dont remember removing it , but it defiantly fits round the window , and its purpose is to hold up/in the loose roof lining material as there is no card ,

so if you could look to see if you have that same trim , that would be great

quick update, my XJS is being painted today after ten days of prep , i picked up the freshly painted bodykit on Thursday evening, as i'm going to fit that, but the bodyshop will do the doors , bonnet and boot ,

I've looked at my sunroof and it was made by Hollandia so maybe it was not factory fitted?I have a couple of photos on my iPhone but I don't know how to put them into this post - if anyone can tell me how then I'll give it a go!
