Gary,

As far as I can find out and please check this out to confirm, P1647 is the upper 02 sensor ( above the cat) on the passenger side.

Type P1647 fault code into your browser and have a general look around. If it is just a pre cat sensor gone, then rectification should not be too difficult. Screw old one out, screw new one in.

It can be a bit more difficult than Mike says! "screw old one out, screw new one in" is rather reminiscent of a Haynes manual! The passenger side upper lambda sensor on an x308 can be a pig to get to.

Prices of sensors vary tremendously. I imagine Jaguar will charge 250 for it. It will possibly be an NTK sensor in a Jaguar box. Check the old one. You can pick up genuine sensors from someone like Gendan for a third of the price. Last time I changed a 308 sensor, I bought a "universal" sensor where you splice the wires to your original plug. It worked fine.

Good luck

I`d try Neville at North East Jag Spares to begin with. He has some of the best prices around and is a pleasure to deal with. Otherwise try ebay or as Paul suggests, Gendon. You might also have a quiet trawl on suppliers internet sites and see what is about. I`d not go the second hand route with these sensors. You only want to do the job once and need it right first time.

This sort of work under the car is probably best done on ramps if you can find some long enough in length. You will need to be able to manoeuvre your tools without bashing your nose or removing teeth in the process. A pit makes a good alternative. Regret to say I don`t like using axle stands where there might be some force x distance spannering in action. Best of all would be a few minutes spent at a local garage with your car on a four poster. Paul says that the passenger side sensor is difficult to change but with the car on a four poster the biggest range of physical movement is possible.

Got a fair price on one fron Gendon Mike (cheers for heads up Paul :D ) and mates got his own garage business with four poster and lets me do bits at weekend after closing so that shouldnt be a problem either ( hes also got a 4 litre S type 2001 with sat nav & all toys he keeps trying to sell me but wifes proving a bit difficult to convince that it will be a good replacement for my faithfull old Laguna diesel) + lashings of free tea !.

Just an update on lambda sensor replacement , as you quite rightly pointed out Paul ' a pig to get at' is an understatement :cry:Did put it on mates ramp and job looks even worse from below than above(Drivers side looks easy to change). Bit the bullet and took it to Bell Lane Jaguar at South Kirby were Richard is going to do work for £70 + vat which looking at job seems very reasonable (lets hope thats it )Got the sensor from Gendan for £109 which compared to Jaguars quote of £384 also seems quite reasonable.Well then, thats tensioners replaced water pump, thermostat tower, coolant flush and 4 new tyres, all that and now i think ive convinced myself that i want my mates 4 litre S Type  so i think il sell XJ and buy S Type and start all over again, not sure about this getting wiser as you get older lark !. Mind you with all the strife Mike's had with his il have plenty of info on BB to cure faults

Well car back and all seems well, gave it a quick thrash down A1 and its running like a dream. going to take it for a run to coast on sunday (Whitby) and give it a proper run out to make sure alls well.Top job done by Richard at Bell Lane Garage and very reasonable, well recommended for your work. If its as good as i think it is it will probably be up for sale as ive decided to sell it and buy my mates S Type, (i think :? ) thanks to all who gave me advice and help
