Ah the wonders of Bank Holiday Driving...

Postby SimonR » Sun Apr 16, 2006 4:33 pm

Took the S up to manchester (from Cambridge) on Friday to see some Uni friends. Naturally I took the scenic route and it was all going to plan until I rolled up at the start of the Woohdead Pass and it was all coned off. This confused the sat-nav completely with the net result being that it took me out into the Peak District national park and then back onto the closed road, some 5 miles further along.

Usually that would be bad news but it turns out that the closure was even further along than that, which left about 5 miles of completely empty tarmac ahead of me. 'A-ha', I though to myself briefly, before setting off to enjoy it. Lovely gentle hills and curves, great visibility and three lanes for most of it... What could be better...?!

Needless to say, I had to turn around and do it again a few times which must really have confused one bloke who was stood in a layby, with a pair of binoculars. Don't think he expected to see a Big Cat moving at speed on a closed road.

I've just returned from Manc and took a bit of a detour on the way home to see if it was still closed but alas they'd reopened it. Damn!

Has anyone else been out having fun in their S this weekend..?

Lucky sod! Most bank holiday journeys are a nightmare of crawling along at 1mph, not blatting along an empty Woodhead Pass. I am envious. I just hope the man with binoculars wasn't an under cover traffic cop searching for wayward cats  He, he, he, you can't blame for trying to burst your bubble, can you? It's only jealousy.

Not been out in my S yet this weekend. I took the X to Snetterton today for day 1 of the JEC race meeting. The S gets its run to Snetterton tomorrow. My cross country route is fairly clear but very bumpy, not like the Woodhead Pass.

I made a small mod to the driver's seat on Friday to give me an extra 1.5 inches of rearward travel on the seat. It should make driving much more comfortable. I'm looking forward to giving it a run tomorrow just to see.

Taking your S out again tomorrow?

Regards,
Glenn.

Like most women they like to shop, so my trip out has been to a shopping center 35 miles out of town.
The traffic wasn't too bad averaging 60mph going out but coming back there was no one around so had a nice cruise on the country lanes at 80mph

Nah, but I think he did enjoy the sight and sound of me flying backwards and forwards. I've just checked the Max speed of the GPS unit. Looks like I maxed at 124, er, Kph. As I said - great visibility and a lovely bit of road.

Well I'm glad you have got your driving position improved. As long as the seat is still adjustable so that I can reach the pedals I reckon it's all good news ;-)

Yes, the S will be out tomorrow, I'm taking my sister to lunch, then I shall have to give it a wash and Harly Wax. It has got quite dirty this weekend, especially the wheels which are more black than silver.

Fear not, it's still adjustable for short ars... ahem, I mean those deficient in the leg department

Hey, you took it to Manchester, just be grateful it still has wheels to clean :D

I know, I know, I've just offended two groups in one message. I just hope I don't run into any Mancunian midgets anytime soon

On a more serious note, we ought to plan something for next sunday, 23rd April. We all need to take our cars out on 'Drive it Day' I know it's primarily aimed at the historic car fraternity, but today's classic is tomorow's historic in my book. There is a race meeting run by the Historic Sports Car Club at Cadwell Park that day which would be singularly appropriate (and be a good excuse to use some lovely deserted roads in Lincolnshire). There should be a wide range of marques competing including some Jaguar representation in the shape of the XK Challenge series.

Typical, I'm at work that Sunday, but will make up for it on Sat 22nd by going to Gurston Down hillclimb http://www.gurstondown.org/ near Salisbury.
Not really a Jaguar event, but a damn good day out where you can get close to the action. Plenty of other dates in their calender during the year if anyone wants to meet up.

Hi Pop,
To my shame, I have never been to a hillclimb. Gurston looks like a lot of fun.
Sadly, I can't make the 22nd, but it'd be great to meet up at one of the later meetings.

Have a really great time on Saturday, and don't forget to take your classic to work on Sunday. :)

Cheers,
Glenn.

Hi all,

I took my car off the road (SORN) at the end of November, for the winter, so I haven't been able to use it this weekend. However, I will be putting it back on road 1st May - horray - can't wait - 13 days. It means that 23rd April classic car day is a non-runner for me though.

All the best, Julian

Just as a taster I've put a few of my photos at Gurston in the Gallery - Click Here
Anyone fancy a day out during '07?

Had a great day, if a bit lonely on the Jag front, at Gurston. The only Jaguar action on the track was Paul Slade and his 3.8 E Type photographed by me in the paddock awaiting his first timed run of the day. Come on you lot, start supporting!!
