Tyre fitting. Specialist Job?

Postby Steve_W » Fri Apr 07, 2006 3:36 am

I started a topic back in September regarding tyres for my V12 to which I had several excellent replies and have a guarenteed quote from blackcircles.com for 117 quid each including fitting. Seems reasonable!

Blackcircles price includes fitting plus balancing. However I have read that balancing tyres for the xjs is not for the average joe, but a specialist job. Is this true or is it OK to get them fitted at a local (non jag specialist) garage?

No different to any other car with larger wheels. The skill comes in getting the weights on the inside of the rim and out of sight. It’s easy to keep attaching lead until in balance, not quite so to get it right.

Hey guys...

This isnt an exact science in terms of the individual...

The machine does it all for you...

Set the macine to alu 2p...Alumimum weights in 2 positions, inside rim weights to outer..pos 1..

Then weights to inside of the inside rim just behind your lattice or 5 spoke or whatever pattern wheel you have.

The macine does the rest..It tells you when your zero weight perfect..

I would personally take your wheels to someone who does tyres day in day out and not jaguar.....

Folks,

I found with my X-type that the wheels had to be balanced with sets of weights on both edges of the inner rim. i.e. on the edge closest to the centre of the car and the edge just behind the 'spokes'. Putting weights only on one edge left me with a bit of 'shimmy' which put a vibration through the steering. The cost is the same so I had them balanced the same way when I got new tyres for the XJ-S. Any thoughts as to whether it's necessary on the XJ-S?

Steve,
Black circles have some very good prices, I got my X-type tyres from there and they arranged for my local Central Tyres centre to fit and balance them. No special skills required and as Foxy says, their machine does all of the clever calculations.

What tyres have you gone for? The XJ-S seems to love Pirellis more than anything else.

Glenn.

Hi Glenn.

Yes both sides of the inner rim as i stated.....One would only fit hammer on weights (outer rim) these days to steel rims with wheel trims.

And yes Sapphire blue really hits the spot with me......

Hi Foxy,

I thought that was what you meant but wasn't entirely sure. I am not familiar enough with the balancing machines to know all of their settings.

Having used alloys for so long, I'd nearly forgotten about hammer on weights. The last time I had those fitted was when a trainee fitter used them on the alloys on my old Landrover Discovery. Being in a hurry when I collected the car, I didn't spot what he'd done until I stopped at a junction down the road and heard hissing coming from one wheel. Imagine my amusement when I saw the clamp of the hammer on weight trapped between the bead and the rim letting all the air out.
It was soon rectified by the trainee after a light slapping and a cuff round the ear. :D
Sadly, I don't think we're allowed to do that any more - Damned health and safety rules

Cheers,
Glenn.

Hey Glenn..

I totally agree:There was nothing wrong with a little corporal punnishment..

As for the knock on weights, they have got a lot to answer for.

My 16in le mans lattice alloys had them on the outer rim and caused serious pitting due to the lead attacking the alloy.I had them refurbed but you can still see the scars.

A little aside:I notice you are in March,Cambridgeshire. My brother is on route at this moment (SAT MORNING) to March via virgin rail, to pick up an xjs 4.0ltr celebration.

The dealer he has purchased it off is in chatteris and has agreed to collect him from march..

He also offered him a small discount as the aircon wasn't working when we inspected the car two weeks ago.My brother declined and agreed to let the dealer fix it.

Turns out the evaporator had a leak,so out came the dash, deactivated airbags etc etc..Ever seen a dealer cry....sob sob...

The xjs is an ex jaguar staff car and the colour "aquamarine" never went into production on the xjs but did appear on the XK8 and X300 from 96....

So it maybe a one off......

As i said just a little aside...

We did observe some fantastic A roads in your neck of the woods, very flat ,,just purrfect for an XJR-S with the sportspack suspension @ 6.0ltr growler power....You lucky boy....

Hi Foxy,

I hope all went well for your brother today. I bet he enjoyed the journey home in William Lyons' best much more than the journey there in the best Richard Branson can offer

It sounds like a really interesting car, JDHT should have some history in it. You'll have to encourage your brother to join the forum and post some photos. It sounds like he's nobody's fool. I like to see a car dealer in distress

Nice to know XJ-Ss run in your family, both blue(ish) too. I take it yours is Sapphire blue? A friend of mine (SimonR) has one that was sprayed the same colour after it was fully rebuilt. It does suit the car very well, epecially in the sunshine when it's highly polished.

You're right about the roads up here. Some of them are over two miles long, straight as an arrow with a clear view of any lurking camera vans. They're a terrible temptation you know. I'm told some drivers have been known to exceed the speed limit.

Eh Guys, thanks for sharing your knowledge on the balancing. I've gone for P600 Pirelli's V15 W's to keep them as near to original as possible.

I'll leave you to chat! thanks again.

Sorry Steve for hijacking your thread. I guess we got carried away.
It's lonely out here in the fens you know :D

Glad to have helped with the tyres though...

Steve,
You will like the P600s I put on a new set of them 10,000 miles ago and have loved the grip and ride quality. Wear rate is superb too.
As for balancing, there used to be a general problem before wide alloy wheels became common as many tyre fitters were only used to skinny steel wheels. These days, especially with the computerised balancing machines I think it is rare to get a bad job done, providing of course that a reputable firm is used.

Walk along any car park and look at how many alloy wheels there are with hammer-on weights! The message is still not getting through and each time I get tyres fitted I have to threaten them the wheel will spontaneously combust if they don't fit stick-on weights!

Is the wheels or the driver that will spontaneously combust?

Just to finish this subject off. The tyres were ordered through blackcircles and fitted by J & A Murphy's of Molyneux St, Rochdale. Not the easiest place to find but worth the effort. Stood chatting to the fitter while he fit my new tyres. He was very professional, efficient and knowledgeable. While chatting he covered a lot of the points regarding alloys you guys had already mentioned. Even showed me how to use the balancing machine.....and to finish off a really good day my car breezed through it's MOT.

sorted, Steve :D

Wheel Balance

Postby Steve_W » Mon May 29, 2006 8:54 pm

Thanks for your in depth reply to balancing. I have had a fantastic response to my initial enquiry and am grateful for all the expert advice. The tyres are on and seem to be running smoothly. I wouldn't pretend to understand everything you say about the balancing but if I have any problems then next time (50'000 miles)maybe I could bring them round to you?

cheers :P Steve W
