Left foot position

Postby poprivet » Tue Mar 21, 2006 12:31 pm

Perhaps I've got big feet, but on a longish trip my left one always gets uncomfortable. I'm sure part of the problem is that wide brake pedal on the auto (why are they that wide?). Im thinking of either replacing the brake pedal section with one from a manual car, or just cutting the width down, this combined with an correctly positioned angled 'rest' for the left foot should make things better. Anyone here done this before?

Hi Pop - You may be interested in how this problem was resolved on bernardembden.com. There is a specific link on installing a footrest.
Alternatively, I think I recently saw that SNG Barratt are offering a ready made footrest for the XJS. Would actually be useful in my manual, but there are higher priorities!
Cheers, Archie.

Lifted this extract from "that other place",

FOOT ROOM: The footwells are tight enough; does the brake pedal have to be so big? Of course not! It doesn’t have to be any bigger than a brake pedal in a manual transmission car. John Ashcroft says, “Just a small mod: cut 20mm off each side of the brake pedal to gain much needed foot room. What a difference it made!” Note that you don’t even have to cut equally off each side: you can cut entirely off one side if you’d like.
Tip: Go to the auto parts store first and check out the sizes of replacement brake pedal pads available. Choose the size you want, take it home, and then trim your pedal to match.
You can take the brake pedal out fairly easily, if it will make it easier for you to trim.

May be of interest?

I see Bernard's car is a left hand drive, so he would have had even more room to start with! I've a brake pedal rubber from a Jaguar manual box car already so will likely tackle this project ready for my impending long trip later this year. Being an ABS model, it looks like lots need to be done to get the pedal out. Im not going to attack it with the angle-grinder whilst in situ

Hi Pop,

Looks like a very neat job and loads of spare room to rest your tootsies.
Did you take the pedal out to trim it or take a hacksaw to it situ?

I have the same problem with my left foot and am thinking about triming some off the left side (of the pedal that is, not my foot). Any tips?

Are you ready to reveal the secret of your long trip this year? We're still eager to know where you're off to.

Cheers,
Glenn.

Well Glenn, having bought the new rubber and measured it carefully, I removed the carpet and trimmed the left and right steel edges vertically with a jigsaw (with a correct blade fitted!). The height was correct already. The arm of the pedal is welded onto the plate, so to allow enough edge for the rubber to fit correctly its not possible to remove metal from only the left side.
In use there is no difference in pedal feel or braking efficiency whatsoever but my size 11's can now move around without getting stuck under the pedals! I wish I had done this mod 10 years ago.

Re the trip, all is going to plan  Watch this space.....

Hi Pop,

Still teasing us I think. I agree with Nigel, it looks a bit like the Cuban flag, but unless that tiny image has been corrupted it isn't Cuba is it.
Have you invented your own flag or declared independence for Poprivetistan? :D

Are you ready to reveal the secret of your long trip this year? We're still eager to know where you're off to.

Ive booked the ferry tickets today, so I'm committed! Here's my plan:
Some of you may have seen in the gallery photos of my recent trip to follow the old A30 all the way to Lands End http://www.jec-xjs-forum.org.uk/xjsbb2/ ... .php?no=11
I also stopped off at Lizard Point so it seemed only right that I should also do the other two 'compass points' of Britain too. so in the autumn I intend to follow the A30 into London (to complete the A30 bit) on to Lowestoft Ness (most easterley point) up to John O'Groats via the Humber and Forth bridges and finally up to Dunnet Head (most Northerly point)
Now rather then just turn around and head south, I will follow the coast road to Ullapool, catch the ferry to Stornaway on the isle of Lewis, travel the length of the Outer Hebrides across Harris, ferry to North Uist, then down South Uist to catch the ferry to Oban. From there I will basically head south diverting throuth the Forest of Dean to take me across the Severn Bridge before heading back to my start point.
Foolishly, some may say, the whole trip will be alone and unsupported by any backup other then my own ability (and if all else fails, AA recovery) :?

Sounds Fantastic
We're only a few miles from the Severn Bridge and would be happy to offer some local back-up (if needed) in the area on the day.
PM me if you are interested.
Good Luck
