Which is best

Postby andypryce » Sat Oct 15, 2011 6:12 pm

Hi, XF forum. Having just disposed of my 2.7 S Type diesel (see S Type forum) I am planning on getting a used XF, test driving a 58 plate 3.0 V6 tomorrow. As I do lots of short journeys I am thinking a petrol option is better than a diesel, does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Hi Andy

Glad to see that you're going for an XF.

I wouldn't discount a diesel - I was a V8 S type fan and took a lot of convincing (3*1 day extended test drives), but am now a diesel convert.

In town with diabolic Edinburgh traffic, I can get 29 mpg from a diesel S.

Best of luck but let's know what you end up with.

Thanks for the advice Hugh, having test driven a 58 plate 3.0 V6 petrol plus a diesel I have opted for the petrol, mainly because it is a better deal they are offering. After having diesels for several years I am a bit anxious about changing back, but I was only getting 22mpg from the S type diesel around town as I was doing such short journeys anyway, so I think it should be ok. Will keep you posted, can't wait to collect it !

Hi Andy - what about an update, when convenient, on how you're getting along with your XF?

Indeed, had it for a week so far, one word sums it up: WOW !

I love almost everything about it, I thought the S type was pretty refined, but this is another level, it's quieter, smoother and feels very taut through bends, as if it is glued to the road. The gimmicks (air vents and gear selector) are still novel enough to make me smile every time. Not so sure about the touch screen, there is just too much on there, I used to quite like having separate buttons for the functions rather than everything being on the screen, but that's a minor niggle.

Being petrol, I'll have to wait and see on fuel consumption......

Mind you, I quite fancy an XJ...
