Clonking rear susoension over potholes

Postby dougallen » Wed Jul 06, 2011 2:28 pm

Has anybody any suggestions to deal with 'clonking' on my 91,000 mile 2001 XJ8 sports suspension. Car rides fine over bumps etc but clonks possibly on bounce back over potholes etc. Bushes are fine but dealer has suggested new shocks at £380 each although they both seem ok - still damping no leaks or sign of malfunction. Would new shocks cure the fault or is there a simpler fault that I should look for. Car rides better with more weight in back which suggests there is some play in suspension

Mine did this.......turned out to be stones trapped between the bodywork an the rear suspension arm. I fished em out with an unbent wire coathanger.
There was a post somewhere which might be a bit more detailed.....if I remember correctly.
