Hi folks
Does anyone know how to remove the stearing wheel off my 54 se diesel
there are two holes in the back of the wheel which I presume there are some sort of screws in there but I am a bit wary of undoing these as there is an air bag in the front

Re: Steering wheel
Hello Jeff,
I have it in mind from a conversation some years back that there was an airbag disablement mode that could be activated by OBD11 interogation equipment. I would like to say just pull the appropriate fuse but I`m not certain that would be best advice.
Can I suggest you mail David Marks for an authorative opinion on the matter. Setting off the airbag system could ruin your day!
Perhaps you could let us know what you find out please.
Mike

Re: Steering wheel
the two back screws do indeed make the airbag come off, you may find they are ' torx ' bolts/screwsHi folks
Does anyone know how to remove the stearing wheel off my 54 se diesel

but before you do this, remove the battery negative cable for 15 mins, to dissipate any potential voltage , then , remove the airbag by gently pulling off and unplugging the control wires , place it face up , so if it goes off ( which it wont ) it doesnt jump into the air , an airbag will only go off with the application of 12v to the contacts
you will now have in front of you the innards of the steering wheel ,
there will be a loom for any steering controls you may have, unplug them , then undo the centre nut , this will be tight, make sure your wheels are straight , once the nut is undone, put it back on by hand for two or three turns, then grab the wheel and pull towards you , the replaced nut will stop it bashing your teeth out, if it wont pull, give it a bash with your fist from behind, this will dislodge it enough to pull off as above
hope this helps

Re: Steering wheel
Thanks BB.
I take it the proceedure for an S is the same as the XJ in detail and operation.
I do remember your imput with that one. Didn`t link it to an S.
I know others have concerns about pics and other matters which were on the old site. I`ll find out what the state of play is.

Re: Steering wheel
Hi guys
I did the wheel aligning job and as B.B. said two screws at the back of the wheel then air bag comes off then remove the wires then you can see the nut that holds the wheel in place.
PS I did remove battery leads first and jacked up the front of the car so I could turn the steering wheel to get at the said screws.
Thanks for the info.
