2.4 Head refurb

Postby steveo » Sat Feb 09, 2008 10:25 am

Hi

I am looking to refurbish the head of my 2.4 as I have a slight tappet noise and coolant leak.

I know I need to get shims for the cam, but what is the best method to attack this?

Do I dismantle first and then measure and order the shim sizes required or can I save time by ordering in a selection of shims?

Has anyone got experience of this?

regards
Steve

Hello Steve,

I would do all the head work, set all the valve clearances using the shims you have, (turn over if worn) and then order the ones for the valves that cannot be set.

Steve,

you can't accurately determine the size of the shims you'll need until the head has been re-assembled. If any of the valve seats have to be replaced or re-cut, there could be a reasonable difference between what was fitted and what you'll now need to get the correct clearance.

Alec/Pete
Thanks both for your help and advice.

Not a quick job then?

I will have to plan it well and take the car off the road for a while.

Cheers

Steve
