3.2 Exec Gearbox Problem

Postby Gatvic » Mon Nov 23, 2009 2:51 pm

Gents,

I have a 70k 3.2 on a 2001 Y Plate which has a gearbox issue/issues - when selecting a gear it 'jumps' into gear and even with a foot on footbrake jerks the car, especially when the engine is idling at a higher speed when it is cold. Also, when pulling briskly away from a standstill with the car in Drive whilst still, the car hesitates and then after a couple of seconds seems to select gear with a bump/bang which seems to get worse the more gusto you try to accelerate with. Gentler starts don't give any problem.

Anyone have any experience of this fault and its resolution?

Many thanks,

Simon

Simon I submitted your problem to Dave Marks he got back to me with his solution to your problem (without seeing the car)...............

Hi Joe,

I would need to see the car and drive it but the symptoms, on the face of it seem to indicate early signs of gearbox failure....................

Sorry to be so pessimistic but it is an all too common thing.

This is an e-mail diagnosis so I may be well off beam - happy to look at the car if the owner wants to come up to Nottingham.

Regards

David

Simon i hope this helps, and to the other guys with the same problem....Joe

Gearbox jerking

Hi Simon
I had a similar problem recently on my XJ8 3.2 with 75k. Had the gearbox serviced and new filter and oil and it is now really smooth. Had the diff oil changed too for £60. Try Stephens Engineering in Thundridge Herts. Great guys and auto experts, and very reasonable prices.Mike
