Power Folding Door Mirrors

Postby E_PITT » Tue Sep 15, 2009 12:55 pm

A few months ago I bought some power folding mirrors to upgrade my XJ8 Sovereign. Fitting was quite straightforward albeit a little fiddly. The wiring is already present which helps no end.

All was fine until recently when the mirrors developed a habit of swinging out from the closed position and rather than stopping after 90 degrees of travel, they would go on until they were pointing forward of the windscreen like some sort of jousting knight's lance.

This is obviously irritating and if i'm honest, a little embarrassing. Has anyone experienced this problem before?

I stripped one of the mirrors right down to the motor today and I really couldn't work out how the mechanism functions. There is a small electric motor, some cogs within cogs and a soft metal casing. If there is some sort of clutch system I can't see it/work it out.

The stock answer seems to be that the mirrors get knocked (or forced by someone who doesn't realise they are electric) and this knackers the mechanism. I would go along with that but I can't see any signs of damage inside.

Any suggestions would be most welcome. It would be nice to work this one through and put a few pictures up of how we solved the problem.

I have had the same problem a few times.........it even happens sometimes when you cenre the left/right toggle switch then press for the return they seem to over ride the centre position
What i did was wait until they got back halfway and phisically stopped them in the centre position.............turn off the igniton and use them as normal for a while before centering the left / right toggle switch and pressing for the folding action to operate.........they should then teturn to centre......at least mine did....another point dont forget to include them in the memory set up when they start to work correctly ...Joe

I think I have finally managed to find an economic and seemingly workable fix for the problem with the power fold mirrors that I described in an earlier post.

I am going to use the mirrors daily for a few months and see if the fix proves to be reliable. In the meanwhile, I will begin preparing some photographs to show how to do it.

Watch this space.

Update: Fix still working after a few months. Will put a photo guide together.
