Boot lock button not working

I wonder if anyone has got any suggestions on where to start looking on this problem.

I lent my Sovereign to a friend last week (coincidence?) and when I picked up the car, I realised that the boot release button on the bootlid now doesn't release the lock. I can't hear the click that used to be audible when pressed.

The release button on the remote works fine and the release button on the dash also works fine.

Does anyone know if there's a separate fuse circuit for the bootlid button (I assume it's an electro-circuit)? or if the problem is likely to be in the button contact switch or somewhere else. I don't really want to start stripping out the boot trim and lock if there's an easy answer.

nah, its the button m8

common problem and replacement is the only cure

however, they are expensive from Jaguar ( £40 ) but easy to change,

or you could buy a complete new trim on ebay for an S-type or XK for half the price all in as the included button is the same as an XJ, but the two pin plug may not be, but thats no problem either

had to do it to mine two years ago , works perfectly now

Posting from a position of supreme ignorance - but could this problem be related to the Valet switch - i.e. could Paul's friend have pressed the Valet switch unintentionally?

If this is the cause, the boot will have locked and can then only be unlocked with the black-headed kery or by pressing the boot release button on the remote key fob.

AsI say, I may be talking utter rubbish - but worth a try???

Thanks for the suggestion. Coincidentally, I lent the car yesterday to the same friend and am going back to pick it up tonight so will give it a try. (Unless he's broken something else on the car!)

As you say, worth a try, but if it was the valet key, wouldn't that mean that the release button on the dash wouldn't work? Anyway, I'll give it a try. Missed a boot button setup on ebay at £21 the other day. Typical, isn't it, when I need one, there seems to be a complete absence of cheap switches around. Also, I couldn't get the key to work in the boot lock, but I assume that this is the typical gummed-up lock problem as you get on XJSs?

Isnt the Green Key for the valet system?.........to be honest ive never tried it anyway.........but one main problem was the wiring from the car into the boot area.......near the hinge it sometimes gets rubbed and breaks...........check that area out.....Joe

Yes, the green key is the one you give to the parking attendant (having pressed the Valet button to activate), so that he cannot gain access to the boot.

Sadly, it isn't the valet button causing the issue. So it's back to ebay for a cheap 2nd-hand switch...or just live with the problem....

But the car did come back from my friend with a new problem! Separate post in Brakes section. Que sera...

Paul its amazing.......you rich people down Kent way with all the money in the world worry about a boot switch playing up........it could be some old pound notes you have stuck in the switch........good job you dont live in the frozen North where money is hard to come by.......and being an old pensioner doesnt help either.........check the bearings first on the X308 it will give more satisfaction...........Joe.....

This has just happened to me, and I have to sort it. This reminds me of the wiper parking problem on my XJ40 : the culprit was not the parking module, but a microswich in the wiper motor casing - this caused the parking to work intermittently, then fail. The cure was to clean the microswitch or if it did nor work, fit a new one. This was a well-known problem on the XJ40. Since there is a microswitch at the back of the trunk release button of the X 308, I wonder ... Has anyone tried to clean or change it ?
