my xj8 has failed its MOT !!!!!

on emissions........

last year the reading was 0.00 ppm , this year it came back as 4.15 or higher, which was flashing red all over the test equipment,

the tester let me take her out for a blast thinking the choke ( or equivalent ) was still on, but to no avail, still very high bad readings, we triad all sorts, but had to result in a fail and come back when its fixed

when i got home i noticed the sport button had been depressed activating the function, i hoping that this will reduce the emissions enough to pass, so its fingers crossed for tomorrow night

i have also run some redex through the car, put in some oil treatment, cleaned the maff and checked the induction hose for cracks or splits

Sorry to dissapoint but SPORT button has no effect on your engine management system what so ever ut only effects your gearbox
I would have a guess at either MAF meter or an oxygen sensor failure causing your high emmisions

I had that problem on my XJ40 and it threw a message of FUEL FAULT 14 i think it was........its not a hard job to fit a replacement on the 40 but i don't know about a 308.........if it proves to be the maff once again Eurojag should be able to sort you a good one out......Joe

thats great info , and just what i'm looking for,

i dont think its the MAF , but i dont have any proof of that yet , and do suspect the lambda sensors , the thing is, i have four on my car 1999 4ltr , and replacements are £289 each from Jaguar, that a big sting if i got to buy all four.....

can a universal 4 wire lambda replace the jaguar one ? i know i would have to splice the plug onto the lead , i assume the extra wires are for the heating function, but they come in at £60 each, a big saving on a ten year old car.....

the other thing is that the car isnt throwing any warning lights or codes to the dash, so i got to get it plugged into a computer to see whats going on

Sorry to hear about the probs. If it is the sensors and even if your VIN is higher than 853935 (which means it has the expensive sensor LNE1684 BB) then you can still find them for about £130. I'm sure that there are generic ones available even cheaper than that. Try contacting:

yes, my vin is later at 876111 , so i'm into some expense i think. in fact it was one of the last few months and thousand cars before the new engines etc,

the car is booked for an hour on the jag diagnostic on wednesday afternoon, at quite a good rate i think, it will be £100 plus the dreaded...


if its just one sensor, i might as well get them to change it and bear the cost, if its any worse, i may well have to have her off the road for a few months

luckily i started my new job four weeks ago, and am cycling the two miles each way ..... ( on my new Bianchi Hybrid.....)

just had a look at the second website, it looks like i can get OEM jaguar sensors for £69 each all in as NOS from america...., i got the part numbers from jag the other day.....

took it in to Jaguar (H A Fox Cheltenham) today to be plugged into the diagnostic computer. and was treated very well for a short notice booking

mixed news....

four codes were thrown ,
P0135
P0155
P1647
P1646

these all relate to the A and B bank upstream O2 sensors, intermittent fault , but more precisely , the heaters in the sensors... but does not distinguish between the banks, so could be either ( or both ) side,

but the real time diagnostics showed all the O2 sensors working fine at the time....

the Cats have also been proved good so far( monitored by the downstream sensors ), and no other faults have been registered on the ECU , the car is also in otherwise great condition

they spent half an hour on the car ( £50 ) and say they possibly need another hour to trace the fault, as they think its a dodgy connector and or wiring fault, but it was the end of the day and i couldnt leave the car with them...

so its booked in for one more hour on friday to see if i can get lucky and they can find any faults, after that , who knows for now, lol

so , i get home and drag out the schematic diagrams for my car on the Mac, i can see that the heaters in the lambda sensors are controlled by relay in the front passenger footwell, this is fed by wire 82 ( NG ) from fuse 11 ( 30a ) in the engine management fuse box in the engine bay , the relay is activated by wire

so i will be out looking at these bits just to see if its a simple fuse or relay causing the trouble, after that i will pull the relevant connectors apart for inspection and cleaning...

well,

i got my replacement ECM today,

Jaguar dealer quoted me £2000 plus fitting and VAT for the unit, needless to say , that was a tad too expensive... reason being , it had to be specially ordered and made by Denso for Jaguar, as they dont keep them in stock

so all i was left with was repair or replace,

after two weeks of phoning everyone who might do it, and then phoning every one they put me in touch with because they couldnt do the repair i discovered that NO_BODY out there is willing to touch my 1999 ECM , most companies only do to 1997 units

so a used unit with no fault codes etc was required

this turned out to be quite a search , one in the USA and none to be found in the UK , i phoned JoeJags on the off chance they could get one, as they were selling a similar unit on ebay, fair play to them , they tracked one down , and for £175 all in it was mine

the main problem with these ECM's is that have to match exactly what you have in the car, and mine , for some reason , is an ' unusual ' version only fitted for about six months , and only to 4ltr Sovs ,go figure, lol
so they had to match my code of LNE1410BE/313 ,

my next task is to install said unit
take it to jaguar for fitting at a cost of about £100 , but as it now has no MOT , i cant legaly drive it there, so there is also the expense of moving the car

or

as i have done, i bought a OBD2 lead kit with interface, and the IDS DVD for Jaguar cars , i will plug all this into my lappy and see what i can melt with it, lol

Hope it all goes ok. Can't offer you any advice on how to do this!

I'm interested in what you can manage with your OBDII kit. I've often thought about buying / building one as my XJS also has OBDII connectivity. I won't disrupt this thread but look forward to reading here or elsewhere what sort of kit you bought, whether you had to make the interface cables and what you can do with it.
